I didn’t know it at the time, but when Lia and I started designing her wedding, she was quietly considering starting a wedding floristry business in Chicago, where she and Cezar live. So naturally, finding the right florist was very important!

Lia obviously had great taste. And she had a pretty clear idea in her head of what she wanted. We collected a couple floral proposals and none of them were quite hitting the mark.

Then we saw something Caroline James Floral posted on instagram, images from a recent wedding. It had some of the same vibes we were going for. I had never worked with Caroline before, but Lia and I both had a feeling she was the one. I spoke with some planner friends who vouched for Caroline. And when we got that proposal back, it was exactly what Lia was looking for.

There are so many incredibly talented vendors out there. I am lucky to call these folks my friends and colleagues. Would Lia have been happy with some of the original florists we considered? Florists whose work I knew personally? Probably. With so much talent out there, I often say You can’t go wrong! But sometimes we have to look a little further to find *just* the right vendor for you. 💜

This invitation suite perfectly captured the golden Aspen leaves for this fall wedding in the T-Lazy-7 Ranch meadow.

When the wedding day schedule allows, you’ll usually find me on the floor in a corner with good lighting, setting up flatlay details for the photographer. This gives them more time to be with the couple, and I get to focus on giving the invites you spent months designing their proper spotlight.

Recently, a guest showed up to an Aspen wedding in a black cowboy hat over a crisp white tuxedo jacket, and the unexpected combination made it one of the best looks I saw all season.

That’s the thing about this town. The guests who stand out aren’t playing it safe, they’re in embroidered orange, paisley silk, a dress covered in florals that pick up every color in the mountains behind them. Aspen draws people who know how to dress for a moment, and summer weddings here are the place to bring your boldest choice, not your safest one.

A few things I’d tell any guest headed to Aspen for a wedding this summer:

Go bold with color and pattern. Florals especially. This is not the place to hold back.

If western is your thing, one great piece goes further than the whole look, a hat against tailored formalwear reads polished, not costume. Kemosabe on Galena Street is where I send guests who want to get this right. A lot of couples set their welcome party as “western cocktail,” and that’s your moment to go all in on the fringe and boots.

A statement clutch does as much work as the dress. Beaded, embroidered, one bold color, it finishes the whole look.

And wear a heel that can survive grass and gravel, because you’ll likely be standing on both.

The Fourth of July has never really been about patriotism for me.

Growing up, we made the same trip every year – to my grandparents’ house in Brentwood, the Pittsburgh neighborhood where my dad grew up. He was one of nine Irish Catholic kids in the kind of family where every holiday was loud, crowded, and full of love.

What I didn’t know as a child was that the Fourth of July parade along Brownsville Road was one of the most iconic in the region. But the parade wasn’t really why we were there.

The grown ups would line kid-sized chairs along the street for us kids dressed in our red, white and blue, and we’d wait for the parade to come by. The firetrucks were so loud. The Shriners in their fez hats drove tiny miniature cars and I was absolutely fascinated by them. When we got fidgety, we’d pick up the helicopter seeds off the sidewalk and throw them back into the air just to watch them float down again.

After the parade there was food – burgers and hotdogs, I’m sure, but what I remember is the desserts. Lemon meringue pie. Strawberry pretzel jello decorated with berries in the shape of a flag. Still my favorite.

All day, people dropped by. Old friends of my aunts and uncles, people my grandparents had known for decades.

The parade and the fireworks were exciting, but they were never really the point. The people were the point. And in the years when I’m not feeling very patriotic, maybe that’s the reminder for myself. For me, the flag has never been so much the point as the gathering.
