Time to eat! Pictured is Spruce, Birch, Aspen & Willow

Part of owning a Catahoula (or any dog) is making sure to keep them well trained and showing them that you are always in control. Controlling their food is an easy way to show them who is boss. Its also pretty cute if you ask me!

We train our Catahoulas to “Wait” and then use the command “okay” when they are released! We use it outside when running around, when guests walk in the house, and pictured here, with food!

When training with this, make sure your dog is not food aggressive first, if they are, work with a trainer! Have your dog in a sit position, put your hand in a stop position, slowly place the bowl in front of them, repeating the command “wait.” If they get up from their sit, pull the bowl back and repeat. At the beginning of training, give them their reward sooner, and over time lengthen the wait time!

For a “stay” type command start with a sit command, put your hand in a stop position, say “wait” and take a step back. Then say “okay!” And let your dog come to you for a treat. Over time, take more steps back, or even run away from your dog, turn away, etc! Fortunately Catahoulas are smart so we are able to do this without treats, and their reward is simply getting loved on! (They love human interaction just as much as their treats!)

Kate's Pawsitive Pups

Just a thought of the day I felt compelled to share..

Working in veterinary medicine is where I single handedly see the most dog to dog mishaps with the general public due to simply lacking knowledge on dog behavior, and lack of respect for both their own dog and other dog’s space. Let me play it out for you, of what I see, all too often. Owner has their dog in the waiting room on a loose, long leash. The Dog is free to roam within a 6 ft radius. Another dog and its owner attempt to come in the doors, only to be blocked and greeted nose to nose by the uncontrolled dog, now tense on his leash, pulling and eager to meet. Its owner speaks out, “oh it’s okay! I’ve got him, and he’s friendly☺️” Here is where I step in to politely ask the owner to keep her dog close to her, only to get a response of “he’s fine, he’s wagging his tail!” 🤦🏼‍♀️ Little do they know, I see something else, way more complex, far beyond their assumptions.

Education and knowledge is power. Especially when you are dealing with an animal that you are supposed to mentor and guide for its lifetime, to ensure stability, confidence, and respect. In my professional and outright personal opinion, never is it okay to:
1) Allow your dog to greet another dog nose to nose on a tense leash
*A dog greeted head on is generally very rude, intrusive, and unnatural in the dog world, and can create conflict right from the get go. Any dog can take this posture as threatening, and begin defensive aggressive behavior. To make matters worse, a tense leash can build the energy in a dog to produce reactive behavior due to space constraints. If you must introduce dogs on leash, it is better to allow them to greet side by side on a LOOSE leash, and relax!

2) Assume that a wagging tail is a happy dog wanting to interact
* A dog will wag its tail for a multitude of emotions. It is VITAL to understand what your dog is saying by it’s tail wag. Based on tail position and speed will indicate how the dog is feeling. For example, A low, fast wag can generally indicate nervous energy, or insecurity, which has potential to cause a fear aggressive response. A high, stiff wag can mean over-arousal/over-stimulation or intent of ready to spring into action. The dog will make lousy choices in this state of mind and make it more difficult to control should they “rev-up” more. A medial, soft & loose wag is generally universal for a happy dog. Get to know your wags!

3) Assume the other dog is just as “friendly” as yours
* Not all dogs are dog friendly. This should be obvious knowledge. Just because your dog is friendly does not mean the other is, too. They could be undersocialized, have social insecurities, or just be dog aggressive. Give other dogs space, please.

4) Allow your dog to interact with other dogs in a veterinary office waiting room
* Dogs often come into the vet office already stressed. It is generally not a place of pleasure as the dog is usually being shuffled into a tight room, being held by strangers only to be poked and prodded at. The smell of other ill dogs or even death is in the air which makes a dog uneasy. Most owners are often nervous FOR their dog during a vet visit so their energy does not help the dog, either. There may be the the smell of cats in the room, stress pheremones, and urine markings from other dogs. Dogs come in not feeling well, or maybe have arthritis, or painful from an injury. They may be recovering from a surgery. Or coming in to be put down due to old age or chronic illness. Now tell me why this sounds like a good spot to “play”?!

We all go to the vet with our dogs. Please make your next visit pleasurable for everyone!

Barking Back Rescue

Look at these handsome young men!!! These three houla boys are looking for love in NY and surrounding states (fostered in Montgomery NY). They are 12 weeks old and nearing 30lbs and will be big boys, likely in the 60-80lb range.

Doc, Freckles, and Bruno will need active homes. IF you have a fenced yard, it must be a physical fence and at least 5.5ft high (no chainlink or invisible). We don't recommend houla pups for homes with small children (under five) unless dog savvy.

Please email [email protected] for an application!

I just read a poster at the vet that said all it takes is 5 pounds. Five pounds overweight can cause heart problems, hip problems, diabetes, and more in our dogs! The middle two dogs are what healthy dogs look like!

Many of you know we are huge proponents of keeping your pets lean and fit. Unfortunately (particularly in the States), many people don't know what a lean dog is supposed to look like. Owners of healthy, lean dogs are always being told their dogs are "too skinny" when in fact they are not. We are just used to seeing overweight dogs and think that's normal.

Here's one of our favorite visual comparisons from malnourished (too thin) to obese. The middle two pics are healthy lean dogs. From the side, you should see a nice tuck behind their ribs and a noticeable hourglass waist when looking down on their back. And for some short coat dogs, yes seeing one or two ribs is OK!

Keeping your dogs at the low end of their healthy weight range will not only help their joints and prevent disease, studies have shown that dogs which are kept at a lean weight, live two years longer than overweight dogs!

📷 Thanks Midwest Canines for this great visual. ♥️

This handsome boy came in today because his mom was concerned about tremors that he had developed a few hours before bringing him in. As it turns out his mom applied a drop of flea and tick prevention to his neck earlier that morning. The flea and tick prevention was for dogs, and it contained an ingredient called permethrin which is toxic to cats. The chemical affects the cat's nervous system and can be deadly if not treated. His mom had no idea that this could happen and she let us share her sweet kitty's story to help educate others about the dangers of using chemicals containing Permethrin on and around cats. We stabilized our feline friend with IV fluids and medications to help with his tremors, and by the end of the night, he was feeling much better!

"But they are so pretty"
I had a very eyeopening experience tonight at home depot. I brought Spruce, my 9 month old Catahoula, along with me to get some flooring tools. At first I met a wonderful lady. She said is he a purebred?! We discussed in depth about Catahoulas and other breeds, dog shelters, and dog owners. We talked until the store closed. I learned that she has been working with rescues and animal control for years and asked me simply to have owners lined up for when we breed in the future. Totally agreed with her on that one. Then a man walked up and reached out and bent down to say hi to Spruce. He was barking and a little unsure about the man. The woman told him he should not have gotten down as my dog could have taken his face off. So true. Do I trust my dog? Yes. Do I trust humans who ignore signs of stressed dogs? No. But that was not all that happened. When we went to check out, two ladies were commenting about how pretty Spruce is. One came over and started petting Spruce, ignoring his step back and him turning his head slightly away. I told them all about how Catahoulas are working dogs who need to be worked or they can become aggressive and destructive. I told them about how they can be aggressive or shy towards other people and toward other dogs. All she had to say is "but they are so pretty!" She completely ignored all my comments about how much work goes into these dogs for them to act as well as Spruce was today. This is exactly why dogs are in shelters, just like the lady from earlier and I were discussing. People do NOT do their research or listen to it and they bring a dog home because they are "pretty." That dog then becomes aggressive or destructive due to the lack in physical and mental exercise. Please learn about dogs and what type of dog would fit well with your family! As National Association of Louisiana Catahoulas says "not everyone needs a Catahoula!"
