The NC Mountain State Fair begins this coming weekend. Visit this celebration of our Agricultural heritage. Enjoy livestock shows, youth activities, mountain music, and community competitions. Good family fun. Students in grades K-12 are free until 6 pm on Fridays. Seniors 65 and over are free on September 12th, and everyone is admitted free of charge on September 10th with the donation of five canned goods. Active military members, veterans, and first responders receive free admission on Sept. 11th.

Fall armyworms are back in local pastures, corn, summer annuals, and lawns. Look for them in early mornings to determine if you need to control fall armyworm larvae, before caterpillars get larger and do even greater damage. If you are considering insecticide applications, AgCare can help with both conventional and organic options. Smaller larvae will do superficial feeding, while larger larvae cause more extensive damage. Damaged grasses may become withered and brown. Under large populations, the appearance of "browned areas" occurs within 24 hours or less.

The best time of the year to reseed pastures is coming up soon. Replacing some of your fescue pasture by interseeding Festulolium Endophyte Free Seed is a great way to boost your average daily gains. It is a cross between fescue and tetraploid ryegrass, capitalizing on the strengths of each. Deeper rooted and better summer grazing than ryegrass, with a relative feed value of a tetraploid ryegrass. Can be grazed, cut for hay, or green chopped. It mixes well with other grasses and legumes and can be fed to all livestock categories. It is fast-establishing, early maturing, and capable of producing 5-9 tons of Dry matter per acre. Seeding rate for new stand 25-30 pounds per acre. For interseeding, 15 pounds per acre.
