I love this diagram!!! I tell all my clients that the best way to have a great dog is to socialize them like crazy before they turn 16 weeks! When they are young, they are flexible and resilient. You want to expose them before they become opinionated about their world. Its a lot of work now or much more work later.

It’s not just the dogs that drive my love for this job. It’s the watery eyes of the human as they tell me they now enjoy walking their dog! Both lives changed!

Lottie road a bus for the first time today. Its a lot for a dog to take in with all the new sights, sounds, and rocking motion. Don’t under estimate the stress they experience. First allow them to see and hear the buses at the station, without getting inside. Then get on and off a bus without riding it. You can do this at the station while they are between routes. Ask the driver if they would mind you doing this for training. I’ve never had one turn me down. Keep the first ride short. Lots of treats throughout each of these stages. Take your time! Go slow. Keep it positive.

Learning to be content doing “nothing.” You may never witness a service dog doing the task they were trained to do. However, they are still working. They are paying close attention to their handler’s eyes, facial expressions, voice, hand cues, body language, scent and everything in the environment. That’s where they find their cues for the behavior they were trained to perform. That’s why its so important not to distract them by touching, talking to, or making eye contact. They are very busy and trying to stay focused. Don’t make the handler be the bad guy that has to kindly ask you not to interact with their service dog. I promise you, the dog gets PLENTY of affection and they love their job. They are not sad. They are busy.
