What started with a handful of battery hens quickly turned into a rehabilitation farm for injured and attacked animals and eventually a forever-home to over 50 animals including many special needs animals.

Do egg prices have you thinking of getting chickens this year?

- Chickens are a commitment with most chickens having a 7-10 year lifespan BUT they only lay consistently the first 3-5 years
- Chickens slow down laying during the winter and darker months
- Predators also like chickens, something to think about if you have other small backyard animals
- You will need a plan to care for your live animals through the cold winters, snow storms, rain, and all other inclement weather
- Animals need to be fed every single day, if you have busy travel plans you’ll need a plan for a chicken sitter
- Chicken feed will attract wild birds, mice, rats, and other rodents so you’ll need either a “fancy feeder” or a plan for handling pests
- If you’re buying chicks most chicks come unsexed which means YOU need to have a responsible plan for your roosters. Rescues are full, we have been for years, and we know that you “hand raised the sweetest rooster” but we can only rescue so many each year! To avoid this the ONLY breed we recommend if you cannot have roosters is a sexlink bird!
- Roosters are not allowed in most city limits for backyard flocks
- Chicken coops are expensive, especially with the correct security measures. Prefabricated coops usually do not offer enough protection to be safe long term and are still very expensive

If you’re ready to fall in love with chickens even after knowing the positives AND negatives, then welcome to the flock!! We love seeing these animals get attention and love, we love welcoming people to self sufficiency and guiding/helping however we can 🐓 Bock bock

We are still here!!! I always have to apologize because every winter our page is quiet because the weather throws us into survival mode BUT I’m happy to tell you we are all still here, our rescue animals are good and happy and most importantly WARM. We miss you guys though :)

Here’s the temperature reports for this weekend… We are spending the night preparing our animals, blanketing the horses, locking the small animals in, and just making extra warm beds in the stalls.
