Bloat is a life-threatening condition that primarily affects deep-chested dogs. Bloat occurs when the stomach twists and accumulates gas or fluid. It can occur when a dog exercises too intensely after a large meal. Common symptoms of bloat in dogs are restlessness, abdominal swelling, retching, and drooling. Bloat requires immediate emergency care.

A healthy gut is critical for overall wellness. Familiarizing yourself with common gut problems in pets will help you identify what is normal and what isn’t. This week we will focus on common gut issues.

Constipation means difficulty passing stool and is characterized by dry, hard, and compact f***s in both cats and dogs. In cats, constipation is especially dangerous and requires aggressive treatment. It can be caused by dietary changes, dehydration, neurological issues, and foreign body obstruction (something blocking the digestive tract).
