Shirlington Dog Park Update (Shirlington Dogs II Source)

It has been over two months since Shirlington Dog Park has been closed and I would like to provide a quick update. First I would like to welcome all of those who have subscribed since then to receive the newsletter and I am sure you and everyone else are anxious to be able to enjoy the dog park again soon.

As you know while Arlington has opened some of the county parks and trails, all of the dog parks remain closed. They offer a unique challenge to keeping everyone safe since social distancing would be nearly impossible. I as well as others have informed the county board and county manager of the details of these challenges and stressed the importance of keeping all dog park visitors safe. This includes the volunteers who perform the daily maintenance tasks that keep the Shirlington Dog Park such a wonderful destination for you and your pup.

During the County Board Town Hall meeting on Friday, May 29, the county manager indicated because of these challenges the dog parks would most likely be the last of the facilities to be reopened and could not give any specific timetable but added another update would be announced within the next couple of weeks.

Personally I see the only feasible way to reopen the dog park would be to require all the human visitors to wear appropriate face coverings or masks. We will have to wait and see what is decided and until then please keep safe and be well. Also I am sure your dogs have been wondering why you have not been taking them to the dog park recently so try to let them know it is nothing they did and not their fault.

Good dog.

If any other local Shirlington businesses would like this page to share your event, specials or any other information during this rough time, please shoot me a direct message or post here on the wall, I will ensure it's shared so the entire group (over 3,500 members) can view it.

It's important in these hard times to support local Shirlington businesses, especially during these times. While the dog park is closed, don't forget how Shirlington feels like a small city within our large metro area.

The Shirlington Dog Park will be closed Tuesday, December 3, from 8:00 AM until 10 AM for tree removal.
Please be advised that no one will be allowed in the park during this time as the county crew will be bringing in heavy equipment to remove a couple of dead trees in the park. Thank you for your cooperation.

The Shirlington Dog Park has been reopened but due to a recent petroleum release into Four Mile Run, please avoid contact with the stream until further notice from the County. This advisory is to allow time for the product to be diminished by natural flushing of the stream.

Shirlington Dog Park October Newsletter

1. The dog park will be closed Tuesday, Oct 15, from 10:00 AM until noon for maintenance, cleanup and tree planting. Volunteers from the company Rosetta Stone will be participating in the efforts.

2. Please help keep the cleanup efforts going by making sure everyone picks up after their dogs. The future of the dog park depends on park users keeping it clean of p**p and trash.

3. As the days are getting shorter, please note that the Shirlington dog park closes 30 minutes after sunset. Everyone and their dogs MUST be out of the park by then. Violators are subject to being cited for trespassing. The closest dog park that has lights and is open later is Ft Bernard, which is up the hill on Walter Reed Drive. See the link on our site for details and list of other dog parks that are open later.

4. Updates on possible new dog park in Pentagon City: Efforts continue to establish a dog park to meet vital needs in the Pentagon City area. The Aurora Highlands Civic Association this summer voted unanimously to support the establishment of a dog park and a resolution was sent to the Arlington County Board. Discussions continue with the Board and public input is critical to make sure dog-lovers’ voices are heard! If you would like to voice your support or help with this initiative, please email Lowell Nelson: [email protected]

5. We are still in need of clean plastic bags, such as those your newspaper comes in, for use in picking up dog p**p. Please put them loosely in the two green mailboxes at either end of the park. You can also place them all in an outer bag and hang it on the shed door handle.
