Chocolate = Conservation at the Parrot Stars Summer Festival!

It is true that chocolate is toxic to parrots, but purchasing some primo chocolate for yourself can help them survive in the wild!

Support the Blue-throated Macaw Project in Bolivia by buying a bar (or two) at the 2026 Summer Festival in Arlington Heights, Illinois on Saturday, July 18th, and Sunday, July 19th. Visit Steve Roper’s table in our outdoor vendor bazaar to try his handcrafted chocolate made from wild-harvested, direct trade, drum-roasted cacao sourced from Bolivia - the Blue-throated Macaw’s habitat!

All proceeds from the chocolate sales will be donated to The Bird Endowment, a 501(c)(3) organization that provides artificial nests and protects reserve areas for these critically endangered parrots in Bolivia. Since 2007, 164 chicks have successfully fledged thanks to this initiative!

Can’t make it to this year’s festival but still want to help? Learn more about The Bird Endowment or donate at www.birdendowment.org.

New podcast episode just dropped! 🎧 In it, our trusty hosts Alexis and Avery discuss a core truth of parrot behavior: parrots are prey animals, and humans are predators. In this episode, they unpack how that instinct shapes trust, handling, fear, and everyday behavior. From freezing and flying away to screaming and biting, many behaviors people label as negative are actually survival communication.

This conversation explores how we can better understand our parrots, reduce fear and conflict, and build trust through safety, choice, predictability, and positive reinforcement. Don’t forget our species spotlight featuring the Indian Ringneck Parakeet (Psittacula krameri)!

Happy , parrot people! Founded by the World Parrot Trust and celebrated globally on May 31st, “World Parrot Day (WPD) brings people together from every corner of the globe to celebrate parrots, spotlight the threats they face, and honor the tireless efforts to protect them.” In celebration of the day, we ask you to take a little time to learn about one of your most cherished, vulnerable species, and see what you can do to help it come back from the brink! Making a difference can mean giving money to help, but it can also be as simple as talking about parrot conservation with the people you love!

Biting comes up in far too many conversations about parrots, and we want to help change that. In our (always free) June class, we’ll focus on biting prevention and how to build a more positive, long-term relationship with your companion bird. Parrots do not want to bite! They are simply trying to communicate in the clearest way they know how. By learning to see things from your parrot’s perspective, you can better understand its needs, avoid triggers, and create a lifestyle built on trust, communication, and prevention. Sometimes, building a better relationship with your bird means rather than always saying “no” to your parrot, learning when to also say “no” to yourself.
