Double L Stable Equine Rescue and Sanctuary

Double L Stable Equine Rescue and Sanctuary Double L is a rescue and sanctuary for abused, neglected, and other 'unwanted' equines of all types. Sanctuary horses interacted w/ special needs people.

At Double L Stable Equine Rescue and Sanctuary we work with abused, neglected, and other 'unwanted' equines. Horses that can be rehabbed and adopted out are helped to find wonderful new homes. Those who require a sanctuary setting for various reasons live out their days with us interacting with high function handicapped folks, at risk youth, and teens with social disorders. We sometimes have folks

here to do community service time through the local court house. Most of the time these people are fighting to get the live back under control and their time here is part of their drug court hours. Horses have an amazing effect on people and our horses seem to understand what is is to come back from something hard. Everything we do here is based on gifts and donations from kind care people. We have no paid staff at all.

It's been awhile since I posted anything here.
Over the last few years there have been some very big changes.
For the last 2 years Angel, the last horse to enter Double L for sanctuary at my farm, has been residing with me in Greenwich. Angel came to the rescue due to circumstances of her family who had been with her for 11 years. For 7 years she sat untouched. Being a mustang she was content to live her days in the large fields watching her surroundings. There came a time when she needed a new space one Fall. Due to her age no one wanted to take a chance on her and she remained un-adopted. The following Spring it was decided she would remain a permanent resident of Double L in sanctuary. She turned out to be a lovely old sorrel mare who enjoyed an occasional stroll down the road or on the trails, very occasional, but every now and then. I promised her she would not move again and I would keep her safe until the end of her days. No matter what was happening with me, I kept that promise.
Last week at the age of 31 she simply laid down and let me know she was tired. She wanted to join the rest of the herd, all who had moved on years ago. She was the last Double L horse in my personal care. I did make an attempt to change her mind with the vet, we tried to convince her to get up but it was clear she was simply done. This one was hard, harder than any other since my very first horse, Lilly. Thank you Steve from Upstate for being so understanding. I have not felt right doing any big fundraising over the past few years since I no longer had the large farm or several horses. I cared for her out of my small salary as a DCO/ACO. Thank you to the handful of devoted horse angels who still sent the occasional gift or collected Clynk cans for her care. Her final care and resting came to about $1000. I have paid it. If anyone would like to make a final gift to help with her final cost they can be mailed to:

The paddock is too quiet. The space is so empty. I need to regroup and deal with this loss. After 25 years of caring for rescue horses I am not sure what to do with myself right now. In the Spring I may consider opening up her space to a foster horse in need.

After 25 years there is one horse in care at a new location with me, and one elsewhere. I have partnered with a friend to form a 501(c)3 Equine Rescue group called the 100 Horses Project. Our last project was sending gift cards for feed to a headman of the Navajo Nation. He is personally caring for 10 special needs wild horses on his reservation.

Hello all. It's been a hot minute for sure. As many of you know I am not currently at the Argyle location right now. For the past 3 years I have been staying locally elsewhere helping care for a family member on hospice. It is not safe to return there, even to operate the barn. I a sorry and feel as though I have let so many of you, as well as the horse, down. I stayed until the very last seniors passed of old age and 1 horse went to a new sanctuary to work with veterans. While I will not go into details here, the handful of you who know me personally will understand, the rest of the horses' supporters will have to have faith I did all I could. I spent years rescuing and helping others and to continue I finally had to save myself. You may all like to know that Double L has helped in the founding of a new 501(c)3 Equine Rescue and that I am the herd manager for the Hundred Horses Project. This project was a life long dream of my dear friend Sharon LaPier. Her dream is now a reality.
( I am now working professionally as an Animal Control Officer in several areas of Washington County, NY -these are all small part time jobs for separate towns and villages within the county but I am pushing for a county wide program with a shelter.) Hundred Horses is just getting off the ground. Just this year our largest donation was a year round gazebo donated by Lowes in Saratoga. It has been transformed into a quarantine shed here on several lovely acres along the river. A huge thank you to Scott Maguire for taking 2 days to put it together. Agway of Ballston Spa gave a discount on the stall mats for the floor and the NY State DOT gave us asphalt milling that made a great stone base to set the entire thing on. In the spring it will be enclosed. There is a barn on the property but it must be reworked. It's slow going but it's going.
The last full size horse from Double L is Angel the mustang. She is 28 and being boarded at a lovely spot in her retirement right now. I am paying for this monthly as well as providing her grain, and other regular care. Farrier, shots, wormer, teeth, etc. All the normal stuff. Ruby the mini is graciously being cared for at 4J in Argyle. I drop off things to help there when I can. Colleen Steidle and her family have been a complete blessing and gift and I will never be able to repay the kindnesses shown by this family. A few of you still send a Holiday Card For Horses card with a gift tucked inside to help with this. If you sent a card this year and it was returned to you, I am so sorry.
( My ex-husband is to blame and hopefully Santa fills all his stocking with coal!) The post office has remedied the situation this week.
Cards to help with horse care can be sent to

c/o 20 River Rd
Greenwich, NY 12809

( Checks should be made out to Double L Equine Rescue and not to me personally please)

I still collect cans and bottles to help as well. Now I use the Clynk system at Hannaford. So much easier! If you are local and have several bags to donate I might be able to pick them up. If you'd like me to send you tags for the bags I can mail them to you and you just scan the tag and drop the bag at Hannaford. Easy easy!

As many of you know I am not currently at the Argyle location. ( it is still in the family) I am still in Washington County, NY as are the horses who are currently boarded out. Several things in 2020 have kept the new facility from being set up. It seems the horses will continue to be boarded though the winter unless something drastic changes. I know everyone is thin right now. I have not done any heavy fundraising in quite a while. I am asking now for any help anyone may be able to offer in the way helping with board payment. The barn is wonderful and the care could not be better. Let's face it, $275/month is a HELL of a deal for board at a professional facility. It has been over 2 decades since I have not had the horses right out my back door and been able to care/watch over/protect them 24/7 on my own. This has been so hard. I am hoping spring of 2021 brings the huge changes needed, there are a few on the horizon now and I hope to share news in the next month. If you can help in any way at all please do. A months board ($275) , a week ($70), a day ($10). Money for a bag of senior feed($15) I supply my own grain. Anything at all would be helpful. Gifts to the horses can still be sent to 9 Tilford Rd. Argyle, NY 12809 and made out to Double L. There is a paypal button at left side menu of the Double L home page. Please let me know if you use that. Thank you in advance for the help. - -
