☀️Summer means sunshine, barbecues, and beach days – but while we’re soaking it all in, our furry friends need a little extra help to stay safe. Dogs can’t handle the heat as well as we can, and here’s why:
Unlike humans, dogs don’t sweat all over their bodies. They cool down mostly by panting and through their paw pads. That means when it gets really hot, their natural cooling system can quickly get overwhelmed. This can lead to heat exhaustion or even heatstroke, which is very serious and can be life-threatening if not treated right away.
🐾 Signs Your Dog Is Too Hot:
-Heavy panting or drooling
-Red gums or tongue
-Lethargy or weakness
-Vomiting or diarrhea
-Glazed eyes or confusion
-Collapse or seizures
If you notice any of these, get your pup to a cool area ASAP and contact your vet!
📍How to Keep Your Pup Cool and Comfy
Walk Early or Late
Go for walks in the cooler parts of the day – early morning or late evening. Pavement can burn sensitive paw pads when it’s too hot! If you can’t walk barefoot on it, neither should your pup.
Hydration is Key
Always have fresh, cool water available. Bring a portable water bowl on outings, and try freezing treats or broth ice cubes for a fun summer snack!
Cool Spaces
Keep your dog indoors during the hottest parts of the day. If they’re outside, make sure there’s plenty of shade and never leave them in a parked car – even for a minute. It gets dangerously hot, fast.
Water Fun
Dogs love a splash! Kiddie pools, sprinklers, or even a damp towel to lie on can help your dog cool down in style.
Groom Smart
Brush your dog regularly to remove excess fur. But be careful with shaving – some breeds rely on their coat to regulate temperature.
A Cool Dog is a Happy Dog!🐶💕🐾
