Look carefully-- can you spot the itty-bitty Shell Dweller Cichlid babies? True to their name, Shell Dwellers use empty snail or mollusk shells for just about everything: to live in, to create territories, to sleep, and to breed. Female Shell Dweller Cichlids lay eggs in their favorite shell for the males to fertilize, then guard the shell until the eggs hatch. The juveniles will stay near their shell until they grow large enough to explore their surroundings and eventually find a new shell to call home. The fry in this video have hatched only days before and have just started to investigate the big, blue world outside their shell.
In order to fully enjoy Shell Dwellers on display, it is recommended to provide a long, low tank as they will primarily spend their time near the bottom. Providing 2-6 shells of different sizes/varieties per fish will allow them to choose the one that's just right.
