SGV families: growling at guests is a safety warning, not “disrespect”

Common scene in SGV homes: guests walk in, your dog:

    •    Stares, goes stiff, tail low or tucked
    •    Barks, growls, maybe snaps if someone reaches
    •    Hides behind you but will bite if cornered

Someone says, “He needs to know his place.” Meanwhile, your dog is screaming “I’m not okay.”
What this usually is:

    •    Fear of strangers in tight spaces
    •    Feeling trapped near the door or couch
    •    Past experiences where people ignored earlier warnings

Three steps for a safer, more “guest‑ready” home:

1    Safe zone, not punishment: Before guests arrive, put your dog in a gated room or crate stocked with chews / stuffed Kongs. The rule: when people come over, you get your safe room.

2    Watch the early signs: Hard eye, lip lift, stiff stillness, pinned ears, tucked tail. If you see these, your dog is over their limit. Don’t drag them closer “to get used to it.”

3    Pair people with good stuff at a distance: From the safe zone, let your dog see guests from far away while calmly eating treats. No forced petting, especially from kids.
If you’re in SGV and worried about bites around guests or grandkids, message me for a Calm Reset Call and we’ll map a specific guest‑ready plan for your dog and home.

Huge props to our graduate team to getting their life back on track🎉🎊.weiner.is.a.dick

SGV dog parents: your “aggressive” leash dog is probably scared or frustrated

You’re walking through San Gabriel Valley, everything is fine… then your dog sees another dog and suddenly:

    •    Lunges, barking and growling
    •    Hits the end of the leash so hard you’re wrapped like a maypole
    •    Tries to chew the leash or collar

People tell you “be a stronger pack leader,” but watch your dog’s body:

    •    Tail tucked or straight and stiff
    •    Body frozen then exploding
    •    Hard stare or “whale eye” (you can see the whites)

That’s fear or frustration, not a power grab. On leash, dogs are forced to approach head‑on, can’t move away, and feel trapped. That’s what you’re seeing.

Three SGV‑friendly steps this week:

1    Train yourself first: Quietly scan ahead so you see dogs before your dog does. As soon as you see one, calmly cross the street or turn away before your dog hits red zone.

2    Treat party at a distance: When your dog sees another dog far enough away to still eat, start a steady stream of tiny treats until the other dog is gone. Dog disappears = treats stop. Repeat every walk.

3    Upgrade gear, ditch shock, prongs, and retractable: Use a 6-8 ft leash and a well‑fitted harness. Short‑but‑loose leash, not tight and buzzing the whole time.

If you’re in the San Gabriel Valley and walks are nerve‑wracking, I offer a free 20–30 min Calm Reset Call where we map your first 10 safer walks together.

Did board‑and‑train fail your reactive dog in SGV?

Here’s why (and what’s next)

Many SGV families tell me:

“We did a 2‑week board & train. He looked great in the trainer’s videos, but on our street he’s still a nightmare.”
Board & train can help with skills in a controlled environment. It often misses:

    •    Your dog’s underlying emotions (fear, frustration)
    •    How to read your dog’s early warning signs (hard eye, stiff body, tongue flicks)
    •    How to handle off‑leash dogs barreling toward you in your own neighborhood

So you come home with a polished “heel” but no plan for:
    •    Crowded SGV sidewalks
    •    Loose dogs who rush your leashed dog
    •    Your anxiety after past bad experiences

In‑home behavior work focuses on:

    •    Your routes, your triggers, your handling
    •    Teaching you what to do the second your dog’s body language shifts
    •    Creating real‑life setups with safe distances and escape plans

If you’re in SGV and feel like you “wasted” money on board & train, you probably didn’t fail. The program just didn’t address your reality.

Message me for a Calm Reset Call and we’ll map what’s next.

SGV tip: why many reactive dogs fall apart in cheap group classes

Group classes can be great for:

1. Social, confident dogs learning basics
2. Practicing skills around mild distractions

They’re often the worst place for:

- Hiding underneath tables and where you are standing
-Dogs who lunge/bark at other dogs
-Bite history or serious fear
-Multi‑dog households already on edge at home (not just group classes)

In a typical low‑cost group:

-Dogs are close together with little space to move away
-Stress “stacks” – new place, new dogs, new people, all at once
-Dogs tip over the threshold and practice exactly the behavior you want less of
- It's harder for you to learn with some many distractions (both for you and your dog!)

If your SGV dog is already leash‑reactive or has bitten:

Prioritize one‑on‑one, in‑home work first. Most of these cases are best solved with guided one-on-one help with a certified professional.

When looking at your next group class on Nextdoor. Look for small, carefully screened groups later, with clear safety rules.

Avoid any class where your dog is used as “exposure” for other dogs.

If you’re unsure what’s safe for your specific dog, I offer Calm Reset Calls for SGV families to sort through options before you spend money or put anyone at risk.

After 10 years of running around trying to figure what being a trainer would mean I:

• Started this journey without an ounce of skill or cent to my name.

• Learned how to walk x amount of dogs in early years gave me false confidence as a trainer.

• Learned to handle complex behavior cases by getting certified, but it gave me confidence as a trainer but false confidence as a as an entrepreneur.

• Started to learned how much I didn’t know about business, scaling, marketing, and all the things that seem to at the top of list now because they are the ingredients to growth.

Things I never knew were important when I started this in 2015.

Just like training dogs, when you really diving into taking on a big project you end up finding out how much you don’t know to make what you want to happen.

If you get far enough you learn it’s not always as simple as it seems, but it gets more doable when you stick with it.

Your early: “I know’s” and “yeah, BUT’s ….”, whatever EXCUSES it is what will stops anyone from getting to their goals from making it easier.

Training a rescue dog to not act bark, lunge, or bite, takes longer to get to success when you actually think it will take.

Hi everyone, hope it’s okay to share this here.

I’m San, a force‑free, behavior‑focused trainer based in Arcadia. I work with families in the LA / San Gabriel Valley area who are dealing with dogs that are:

    •    Reactive or barky on walks
    •    Nervous or over‑the‑top around people or other dogs
    •    Having a hard time settling in the home
    •    Making everyday life feel like “we’re at our limit”

My focus is on behavior and routines rather than just obedience words, so we look at safety, daily “dog jobs” (outlets that actually match the dog), and simple, realistic structure that fits real life.

Right now I’m only offering a few free Calm Reset Calls for guardians in the LA / SGV area who feel stuck and want a clearer plan.

On a 20–30 minute call we:
    •    Talk through what’s going on with your dog right now
    •    Look at safety and daily routines (home + walks)
    •    Map out a simple 60‑day calm plan you can start using right away
    •    I send you written notes so you’re not trying to remember everything later
There’s no pressure to sign up for anything after that – the call itself is meant to give you clarity and a path forward.

If you’re in the LA / SGV area and your STUCK in your situation and you’d like one of these spots, you can DM me here or text “RESET” with your name, your dog’s name, and your city to 626‑321‑1977, and I’ll send you a couple of time options.

Thank you to everyone who made this little holiday drive so successful – every view, reply, share, and donation, big or small, mattered made a difference, a $2,000 in retail value of donations to one of our local Arcadia rescue organizations.

This year we chose to support Homeless To Forever Foundation, a local rescue in Arcadia that doesn’t always get the same spotlight as bigger names like Pasadena Humane, but is doing incredible work for dogs in the SGV every day. We’re proud we could bring them a little extra help this holiday season.

When you support drives like this and our work at Ruff Roll Academy to spread canine education that impact the people and dogs that make up of local community, you’re not just filling bowls – you’re keeping the dream of small, values‑driven businesses and rescues alive and well.

Thank you for showing up for the “up‑and‑coming” groups that truly make the difference in our community. We feel really lucky to be building this with you.

This year we wanted to do something simple and good for the animals who don’t have it as easy as our own dogs.

From Dec 1–14 we’re running a Holiday Pet Food & Supplies Drive for a local rescue in Arcadia that helps homeless pets find forever homes.

We’re collecting:
• Unopened dog & cat food
• Treats
• Leashes, collars (no prongs, e-collars, choke chains or Martingales), harnesses
• Beds, blankets, toys

HOW TO JOIN
• Drop off items with us [we’ll send you the address] or
• Bring them to any in-person session with us between Dec 1–14

On Dec 17, we’ll deliver everything in one big gift.

If you’d like to take part (even with one bag or one toy), comment “I’m in” or send us a DM and we’ll message you the drop-off details.

Thank you for helping us make life a little softer for some deserving animals this season!
