SGV families: growling at guests is a safety warning, not “disrespect”
Common scene in SGV homes: guests walk in, your dog:
• Stares, goes stiff, tail low or tucked
• Barks, growls, maybe snaps if someone reaches
• Hides behind you but will bite if cornered
Someone says, “He needs to know his place.” Meanwhile, your dog is screaming “I’m not okay.”
What this usually is:
• Fear of strangers in tight spaces
• Feeling trapped near the door or couch
• Past experiences where people ignored earlier warnings
Three steps for a safer, more “guest‑ready” home:
1 Safe zone, not punishment: Before guests arrive, put your dog in a gated room or crate stocked with chews / stuffed Kongs. The rule: when people come over, you get your safe room.
2 Watch the early signs: Hard eye, lip lift, stiff stillness, pinned ears, tucked tail. If you see these, your dog is over their limit. Don’t drag them closer “to get used to it.”
3 Pair people with good stuff at a distance: From the safe zone, let your dog see guests from far away while calmly eating treats. No forced petting, especially from kids.
If you’re in SGV and worried about bites around guests or grandkids, message me for a Calm Reset Call and we’ll map a specific guest‑ready plan for your dog and home.
