They say you've got to spend money to make money, so I decided to invest in a Prusa Core One 3d printer, to replace my aging Ender. Both quantity and quality of parts produced will go up, and it should be easier to maintain.

I've received a number of questions concerning the materials used for my 3d printed items, and wanted to lay a few things out about the materials used.

The two most commonly used materials in 3d printing are PLA and PETG. Almost all of my products are made from PETG, which is chemically very similar to the plastic used in pop bottles. It is very stable chemically and will not decay, or leech chemicals into your tank. PETG also has better impact resistance than PLA, and although shrimp are not known for attempting to destroy decor, they will hold up better if dropped or squished.

PLA is biodegradable, and is manufactured from corn. As such, it will begin to deteriorate when placed into a warm, wet, bioactive environment, like an aquarium. The only part I make out of PLA is the lid props for the Fluval Flex tanks, since those are not intended to be submerged. They will float if dropped into the tank due to the trapped air within.

Even supposedly identical materials from different companies can be different. Company A may use different dyes or additives with their black PETG than company B does. I make sure to use material from a single, known supplier. Some of our oldest prints have been in a tank for a year and a half, and show no signs of deterioration.

I was just bagging up some of my scarlet temple for the fish fair tomorrow, and had an odd thought. I've been keeping aquariums all my life, and even as a boy I disliked the garish neon colored plastic plants. Preferring the real plants, I got better and better at raising them, and have now gotten the scarlet temple to the point where the colors are so vivid that they almost look fake. Fate is seldom without irony, it seems.
