Happy Tuesday! It’s and we’ve got a fun fact for you all today.

A lot of folks will take a look at the pictures below and see moldy leather. While mold is often a problem, particularly for tack that is stored in areas with humidity or poor ventilation, the leather below *isn’t* actually moldy!

These images show what is referred to as leather bloom, or “fatty spew” - and while it looks alarming, there is no need to panic! Many quality leathers are imbued with fats during the tanning process, and that residual fat can come to the surface due to fluctuations in temperature and humidity.

How do you tell the difference?

- Mold generally comes with a musty odor that bloom will not
-Mold tends to be more white-green, and can be fuzzy or feel dry or powdery
- Bloom will feel waxy, and as shown in the last photo, a little heat or buffing with a towel will reintegrate the wax easily

If you’ve experienced moldy tack, you know that mold can be persistent, and mold treatment is a service we offer seasonally at Stitchwitch Leather Works. Mold is like a plant and can have roots into the fibers of the leather, making it very difficult to eradicate on your own.

However, if you notice some white bloom on your saddle, particularly during dramatic temperature and humidity swings, like Minnesota has experienced recently, it may be fatty spew. If the tack is otherwise clean, you can just buff this wax back in to your saddle!

is here again!

Today we’re sharing less of a repair, and more of a personalization. This beautiful saddle wasn’t in need of a true repair, but its exterior billet straps were causing the owner some discomfort and occasionally pinching her leg while riding.

Beth to the rescue! Beth crafted a channel for the problem billet to slide into, giving the addition extra stability by matching it into the saddle’s preexisting kick plate and stitching designs. The rider can now enjoy her saddle with no fear of pinching!

It’s amazing what an impact a change like this can make - do you have an item that is “nearly perfect”? Let us help! Contact Beth today via our website, email or message.

It’s 🎉

Today we wanted to highlight some saddles that have come in to be dyed. While we’ve shared a number of saddles that were black, we wanted to show off some brown saddles today. 🤎

These two saddles were looking a little rough; brown saddles can look dated due to color preferences changing, or wear unevenly over time, resulting in a look like these “before” pictures.

What do you think of the “after” images? Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have a saddle in need of a facelift or repair!

Happy windy Tuesday, friends!

It’s 🎉🎉

We’ve been reminding you all to check your saddles, billets and tack for damage a lot lately. Let’s show you an issue, as well as a fix this time!

Today’s photos are of a well loved saddle that is showing flap wear on one or both sides - wear can start on the leather surface, or a riders leg can, over time, wear on stitching at the bottom of the flap, which opens the door over to issues like our first photo.

We call the solution kick plates in the shop, and these beauties are hand designed for each saddle from sturdy matching leather.

Beth puts an enormous amount of care into ensuring the new addition lays smoothly under your leg, matches the stitching to the preexisting stitching to ensure these patches will lay perfectly, and give your saddle many more years of use 💚

Happy friends!

Today’s repair is a bit of a mirror image of last week’s change - last week we removed a point and v billet set up and replaced it with straight hanging standard billets. This week, we did the opposite! This saddle came in to add a point billet, and got a fantastic make over as well 😍

This saddle left not only with a fresh billet configuration and a set of fabulous “Beth Billets” but also got a makeover with some dye and conditioning.

We love helping saddles work better for horse and rider, and performing makeovers just like this one 😊 Now is a great time to get your saddle on the list for repairs, or get a worn saddle looking show ring ready with a fresh layer of dye!

Many dressage saddles, in particular, are made with a point and v-billet system. This type of billeting doesn’t always work for every horse, and in today’s we reused the existing V-billet to hang two straight hanging billets.

Have a saddle that is not quite perfect? Together with your saddle fitter, we can help!

The first two photos show what we started with - scroll to see the transformation 😍

We started with a little facelift on the exterior, removed the static knee blocks and replaced them with Velcro for ultimate customization, and finally, added dees to the pommel area. We think this one looks so fresh!
