It is with a heavy heart that I share the news of little Reba's passing.πShe passed away peacefully while in her room with her friends Buddy and Hannah close by. Even though she was a tiny little budgie, Reba Skye was a spitfire with a spirit as big as a mountain. She was the definition of "small but mighty."
I hope you'll take the time to read her story below.
Reba was found outside in August 2021. She had been spotted visiting a bird feeder in a friend's backyard. We don't know how long she'd been braving the elements but we finally caught her after trying for 5 days. Amazingly, during that time, this little girl was able to evade predators and survive a couple of severe thunderstorms.
We searched for her guardian but to no avail. It's hard to imagine that there wasn't someone frantically looking for this beautiful little bird. Sadly, because of their abundant availability in the pet trade and cheap price tag, budgies are often considered "disposable," easily replaceable birds. Many are just let go outside when their humans are "done" with them. Since we don't know Reba's history, for us her story started that summer in 2021.
She was a few grams overweight when she arrived at Icarus even after she'd been flying outside and braving the elements for days. She had a severe tail bob when at rest. Her vet exam revealed a couple of lipomas (fatty tumors) and a heart murmur along with a suspicion of fatty liver disease. Most recently she was diagnosed with an enlarged heart and a hernia. Since her arrival, Reba had been on and off various medications including hormone injections.
I had always wanted to find this precious little girl a wonderful home with other budgies since she preferred interacting with birds over humans. She needed a home that had at least one female budgie (no males), a safe area for flying and would provide for her medical needs through an avian vet. It shouldn't be that difficult to find her a home . . . or so I thought.
After checking into several recommended homes, the deal breaker for most was the veterinary care, including one person who had several budgies and worked as a vet tech for a dog/cat vet who also saw birds. Even she didn't take her little feathered gems in for any veterinary care. Why not???
It breaks my heart that all too often, people don't treasure or even appreciate these very social, intelligent little birds enough to go the distance for them. Budgies are considered by many as easily replaceable given that a new budgie often costs less than a vet visit. So when their budgie dies, they just go out and buy another one πJudging from the leg band we removed when she first arrived, most likely Reba was purchased by someone from a PetSmart.
Even without budgie friends, we saw to it that Reba Skye's last few years on earth were as happy and enriched as possible. She was able to enjoy fresh food, flight and friends.
Fly free beautiful little angel! π©΅π€π We will all miss you.
