Winston has officially finished his CHOP chemotherapy protocol and we couldn't be happier for him!!

He always brings a smile to our faces with his sweet personality, and it's safe to say he's a favorite throughout the hospital. Even team members from other departments look forward to seeing him.

Winston knows exactly where the treats are and never forgets to stop by for one. He's truly the king of the lobby and keeps everyone smiling with every visit.

Meet Heather! With nearly two decades in the veterinary field and 9 years at AVIM&O, Heather has made an incredible impact as an Oncology Technician and leader within our team. For the past 6 years, she has also served in a leadership role, helping guide and support both patients and coworkers alike. 💙🐾

Oncology medicine is more than just a career for Heather - it’s truly her passion and purpose. One of the most meaningful parts of her work is building lasting relationships with patients and their families throughout their treatment journeys. She strives to be a source of compassion, support, and guidance during some of the most difficult moments in their lives.

Heather also loves mentoring and supporting her team, finding joy in watching others grow, gain confidence, and develop their skills along the way.

Outside of veterinary medicine, Heather is a strong advocate for individuals living with chronic health conditions, including Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, helping raise awareness and support for others facing similar challenges.

When she’s not at work, Heather cherishes spending time with her family and loving on Harvey, her handsome orange cat who completely has her heart. 🧡🐱

✨ Everyone, meet Leia! ✨

Leia is a sweet 3½ year old Goldendoodle whose journey has been nothing short of inspiring. In January 2026, she underwent a toe amputation after being diagnosed with osteosarcoma. Two months later, she came to AVIM&O Annapolis to begin treatment with Dr. Bardales.

After six rounds of Carboplatin, we are so excited to celebrate Leia's graduation on July 15, 2026! 🎉 Even better, her most recent recheck showed no evidence of disease spread, which is the best news we could have hoped for.

Although Leia has officially graduated from chemotherapy, she'll continue to see Dr. Bardales over the next year for routine monitoring to make sure she continues doing well.

Leia, your strength and resilience have been incredible to watch, and we couldn't be happier for you and your family. 💜 Congratulations on this amazing milestone! Please help us celebrate this brave girl in the comments! 🐾🎓

🎉🐾 Congratulations, Amico! 🐾🎉

Everyone at AVIM&O Annapolis would like to take a moment to celebrate one of our amazing oncology patients, Amico, on graduating from his 8th chemotherapy treatment! 🎓💙

We couldn't be more proud of how far Amico has come. Throughout his journey, he's made plenty of friends across our hospital family, including Anne Arundel Veterinary Emergency Clinic and Chesapeake Veterinary Surgical Specialists and has touched the hearts of so many along the way.

To Patti & Jack, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you for trusting us with Amico's care. It has been an honor to be part of his journey and we are so grateful to celebrate this milestone with you.

Amico's journey began back in January when a mass was discovered on his spleen. We brought him up to the AAVEC and the next day he had his spleen removed by Dr. Moore at CVSS. Later we discovered it was hemangiosarcoma. We decided to discuss options with AVIM&O and decided to give it a try.

Amico has just graduated from his 8th Chemo Treatment and it seems to have been a success in slowing the cancer down and as of now no spread of the cancer to other organs. This has given him and us the ultimate gift of more time with him!

Although I know it isn't a curable cancer the care he has been given has been priceless! Not only to him but to us. Dr. Bardales has been very informative and has given her very best to Amico! The staff have also been supportive. They have loved and cared for Amico as if he was their own pet.

I am so thankful for each and everyone at AVIM&O. As most can understand, this journey has been very emotional and to still have him with us and enjoying every moment we have left is worth more than words can say!

For patients currently receiving treatment with us, our team will continue providing updates by calling from our cell phones. Pet families are also welcome to come directly to our location if they have questions or would like an update on their pet.

After being an integral part of our ICU team at Annapolis AVIM&O, Allison is leaving us to pursue a new opportunity.

Throughout her time with us, Allison played a significant role in helping elevate the level of patient care our hospital is known for today. Her dedication, compassion, and commitment to our patients and team have left a lasting impact on both our staff and the families we serve.

✨ Meet the Team Monday: Meet Bridget! ✨

Technically her name is Brittney... but if you know her, you know she's almost always Bridget. 😊

Bridget is our incredible Records Coordinator, joining us remotely from the far-off and magical land of Tennessee. This September marks an amazing 13 years with AVIM&O—and we're so lucky to have her as part of the team!

When it comes to workday essentials, Bridget enjoys having background music or movies playing while she works—no headphones required. 🎵🎬

A few fun facts about our resident record-keeping superstar:

👻 Horror movies are actually her comfort movies. Feeling down? Hand her a scary movie and she's good to go!

🦄 If she could have any pet, she'd choose a unicorn. Or a dragon. Or maybe a giant fluffy Newfoundland. Honestly, all three seem fitting.

📚 Outside of work, you'll usually find her curled up on the couch with a good book or movie. But she also loves spending time outdoors among the trees or tending to her garden. 🌳🌻

☕🍵 Team Coffee or Team Tea? Why choose? Bridget enjoys both—decaf, with a small spoonful of sugar and a dash of milk in her coffee.

And finally, Bridget would like everyone to know that she has a Squishmallow, blanket, and sock collecting "problem"... although she strongly argues that it's not actually a problem. We agree. 😄

🔥🐾 Pet Fire Safety Day 🔥🐾
At Atlantic Veterinary Internal Medicine & Oncology, your pet’s safety is always our priority especially when emergencies happen fast.

Fire emergencies can be frightening and unpredictable, but a few simple steps can help keep your pets safe:

🐶 Keep collars with ID tags on at all times
🐱 Place a pet alert sticker on your front window so first responders know pets are inside
🐾 Practice safe leash/crate routines so pets can be quickly secured if you need to evacuate
🔥 Keep pets away from open flames, candles, space heaters, and stovetops
🚪 Have a go-bag ready with food, medications, leashes, and medical records
🏠 Know your pet’s hiding spots so you can locate them quickly in an emergency

Most importantly, always have an evacuation plan that includes your pets. They depend on you for every step of their safety.

If your pet is ever injured in a fire or smoke exposure, seek veterinary care immediately.
