Happy Wednesday! We hope your week has been dog-gone good!
We are celebrating the adoptions of some great animals today: the chinchilla Luna, the cats Turk, Chia, Georgia, Sian, Catifornia Roll, Stacy, Tamachi, and the dogs Callie, Lizzy, Napsalot, Blaze and Glow (formerly Woofsalot and Eatsalot), Fluffy, and Peanut!
A special shoutout to the cat Chia, who needed some extensive medical care before she became ready for adoption. You may remember Chia from fundraising posts we made in February, to help cover her surgeries to remove hernias and to repair her abdominal wall. Chia is now very happy in her home, feeling much better and ready to purr away in her family's laps. Thank YOU for helping make her new life possible!
We are open tomorrow from the hours of 11 AM until 7 PM to help you find a new pet, shop in our Paws To Shop store, or to answer any of your questions about how to help animals in need!

We plan to welcome puppies to HSHV tonight, who will be available for adoption this Friday, April 25th! Here's a preview of the cuties we expect to see 🐾🎉
Please note: these pups haven't arrived at HSHV yet, so we don't have many details about them -- but tomorrow (Thursday) we'll send out an email at 4pm with photos, guessed breeds, ages and sexes for each pup! Sign up for that info here: hshv.org/lovetrainemail

We'll have lots of adorable Love Train puppies available for adoption this Friday (4/25) but if true puppy energy is not your vibe, please check out all of our older buddies who also need loving forever homes!
Note: while Nova is 9 years old, she is essentially a high-energy human toddler trapped in a dog's body... so she's actually got a lot in common with the Love Train pups, housetraining aside.
For more info on any of the animals at 💙 hshv.org/adopt 💙 please contact our adoption specialists at (734) 662-5585 or [email protected] 🐾

Maybe a good time to talk about if you have a favorite plant-based milk? 🥛🥰
The testing center that oversees food safety says it "is no longer able to provide laboratory support for proficiency testing and data analysis."

We are open tomorrow from the hours of 11 AM until 6 PM to help you find your new furry soulmate!

Luna the chinchilla is looking for a new nest! Could it be in your home?
Luna is 1 year old and needed some care from our shelter medical team, after being attacked by her former housemate. After that experience, Luna prefers not to live with any other chinchillas! Thankfully her wounds are healed, and she's ready for a new start.
Luna is nervous at first, but sweet and gentle once she learns to trust you. She's currently living in foster, but we'd love to set up a visit if you're interested! Just give us a ring at 734-662-5585, or email [email protected] ❤️

Were you taught to extend your hand when meeting a new dog to allow them to smell it? So were most of us! But is this actually good advice?
Extending your hand toward a dog you don’t know could be seen as a potential threat, and trigger a defensive bite. Instead, turn sideways, avoid direct eye contact, and possibly toss (don’t hand) the dog some treats. Dogs have amazing senses of smell – they can gather information just fine from where you are, so go ahead and keep your hands safely to yourself! 🐾

Luna Lou has a request. Well... two of them.
Firstly, our shelter is running dangerously low on spray cheese. Could you spare a can or two? 🧀 To donate from home, you can find our Amazon and Chewy wish lists at 💖 hshv.org/wishlist 💖 OR stop by the shelter any time! There is a big blue donation bin just inside our main entrance. 😊 Thank you so much!!
Secondly, Luna would really love a forever home of her very own. This 3-year-old cutie with the corn chip ears is the absolute sweetest, but she’s still working on feeling safe around new people. She’ll need a patient, experienced adopter who can help her build confidence at her own pace. In return? You’ll get a loyal, loving girl with so much heart.
And speaking of heart--Luna Lou is a member of our Gold Hearts Club which means she is FREE to adopt! 💛
For more info on any of the adoptable animals at hshv.org/adopt please contact our adoption specialists at (734) 662-5585 or [email protected] 🐾

Shout out to one of our Walk & Wag sponsors, Wag N' Wash!
Their Ann Arbor location just opened last year and they lost no time in reaching out to HSHV. We had an adoptable dog at their opening ceremony and they've continued supporting us since day one with food drives, dog visits and now a second Walk & Wag sponsorship (Walk & Wag, Wag N' Wash -- they go together perfectly!). Remember Wag N' Wash if you're looking for grooming services, self-serve dog washing, boutique pet toys & supplies, natural dog food and more!

Since 1896, the Humane Society of Huron Valley has existed to support the loving and responsible care of animals in our community. HSHV is still the only shelter in Washtenaw County, serving over 14,000 animals and their people every year.
A no-kill shelter: Thanks to innovative programs and community support (including >1,700 volunteers!), animals at HSHV do not have a time limit to get adopted. HSHV is classified as a no-kill shelter by Maddie’s Fund, a leader in the no-kill movement, and has won several awards for having the highest save rate among all similar shelters in Michigan.
Not just cats and dogs: Though HSHV is primarily known for helping pets, we serve all types of animals and have been aiding area wildlife for over 60 years. Today, HSHV serves farm animals through cruelty investigation services and operates a 24/7 emergency rescue service for sick and injured wildlife (funded through donations) and a humane wildlife removal service (available for a nominal fee).
Let’s talk cats: For most of history, cats have lived outdoors; in fact, kitty litter wasn’t invented until 1947! Today, though most Americans keep cats indoors, some exaggerate outdoor cats’ impacts and demand culling -- which was found to increase birth rates. Ten years ago, HSHV started a Trap-Neuter-and-Return (TNR) program, proven to effectively and humanely reduce the population of outdoor cats. And in 2016, HSHV opened the Tiny Lions lounge and adoption Center-- a cat cafe focused on responsible cat adoption and humane education.
Humane societies are all different: Though people often think humane societies are linked, they’re not! HSHV is an independent organization and is not affiliated with, owned by, or funded by any other humane organization. Think of “humane society” like the term “hospital;” though it means something in terms of similar services offered, they’re all run differently.
We encourage you to visit our shelter at 3100 Cherry Hill Rd, Ann Arbor, MI -- or our Tiny Lions lounge and adoption Center cat cafe at 5245 Jackson Road. Or see us online at www.hshv.org!
