What’s going on at Scio Church Stables??

While many older barns in the Midwest are falling into ruin, we continue to restore, renovate, and revitalize the buildings on this historic farm.
The land was homesteaded in 1832, when Michigan was at the frontier of westward expansion. The big hip barn that you see in this picture was built around the turn of the last century. We know that it is more modern than the smaller middle barn. Rather than pegs and hand-hewn axe marks on the timber, the big barn has both pegs to hold the beams, some hand-forged nails, and rotary marks on the timbers, indicating use of a mechanical saw.
Weathering on the big barn’s southern exposure from the sun has gradually resulted in a labyrinth of holes for birds of all kinds! Very nice for the birds, but not so nice for storing the high quality hay that we grow, harvest, and store here.
The barn is built of old growth wood, sourced from the property from trees that likely emerged from their seeds in the early to mid 1800’s, is being replaced with new cedar planks. The new siding will hopefully take the barn into the next century. If anyone is interested in salvaging the beautiful old barn siding please contact me!
As stewarts of this place at this time, we are happy to participate in preserving a bit of Michigan.
