Unhappy Facebook posts re: poor hay quality this year are plentiful. Seeing them, I can’t help but think of my neighbor Dave who hayed our fields for many years. I think of the heart and soul he poured into his task; fluttering anxiously over the freshly cut fields like a nervous hen with her chicks until the hay was safely in the barn.

Each year was a crap shoot, with the formula being: Instinct+Skill+Mother Nature=Hay. When Mother Nature defied the odds, she’d always win.

We anticipate a tough hay year for clients as we move later into the season. We’re doing our best to be prepared. And in terms of quality? This enlightening reply to a recent post criticizing a hay farmer is well-worth the read. Thank you grower Allie Fay for sharing your knowledge.

Allie Fay: “Stepping in as a farmer and supplier. This was a federally recognized disaster year. What the land gave us, we gratefully took. Hay tonnage was down over 50% on first and over 80% on second. We were LUCKY to get what we could to feed animals. Some animals may have to adjust their pleasantries a bit this year because it’s just not always in the cards for your average horse owner to ship hay in for premium prices.

We started the year with heavy rains leaving almost no spans of good weather to put hay up. We didn’t even seriously get started until after the Fourth of July and then had to put things back on pause because we kept getting rained out. By the time we could actually get a good window the weeds started growing up. And then, if you got the first cut off too late, the second cut scorched because we entered a severe drought.

We need to have more compassion and understanding for what farmers go through to feed this world. We all need to be in this together ”

“She’s a rescue so I don’t know much about her. Lately, she’s gotten a lot worse under saddle. Maybe a vet should see her but I can’t really afford that. I need a horse I can ride; I might have to get rid of her. But who would take her? What should I do?”

We’re sad. For the horse. Our client seems able to afford matching tack, entry fees for shows, pricey riding apparel. We typically might question assisting. But assist we did: for the vet assessments needed to determine if a medical issue is causing the recent behavior.

Why? For the sake of the mare. She’s been through a lot. If she’s “gotten rid of” yet again, she should come with as much information as possible to help her be successful. No, we can’t guarantee the info would go with her. We can only rely on our faith in humans to do the right thing.
