Let’s talk about Merle coat…..
💙 Merle Dogs are Beautiful, Unique, but also a big responsibility
The merle coat pattern is one of the most striking and beautiful patterns found in dogs. Those gorgeous marbled coats and stunning blue or partially blue eyes are part of what makes merle dogs so special.
However, merle breeding requires knowledge, experience, and careful genetic planning.
Many people don’t realize that some dogs can carry the merle gene without visibly displaying the merle pattern. These dogs are often referred to as “cryptic merles” or “hidden merles.” Because they may not look merle, genetic testing is an important tool for responsible breeders.
When two merle genes are inherited (known as a double merle), puppies can face a significantly increased risk of serious health issues, including:
• Deafness
• Vision impairment or blindness
• Eye abnormalities/ lack of eyes
• Increased risk of other developmental defects
•neurological issues
•cardiac problems
These birth defects are painful, can lead to death and ALWAYS result in a low quality of life for the innocent pup
This is why responsible breeders carefully research pedigrees, ALWAYS use genetic testing and never make breeding decisions based solely on appearance.
An ethical, responsible Breeder WOULD NEVER breed Merle to Merle, wheather or not a dog presents with a Merle coat or is a cryptic Merle.
At Heart of Denali Bulldogges, we believe beautiful dogs should also be healthy dogs. Responsible breeding means understanding genetics, protecting future generations, and always putting the health and well-being of our dogs first.
Education matters. Responsible breeding matters. Our dogs deserve nothing less. ❤️
Before today, had you ever heard of a cryptic merle?”
