Paws for Purple Hearts Alaska

Paws for Purple Hearts Alaska PPH is built upon the trusted and time-honored tradition of Warriors helping Warriors. The benefits extend well beyond the PPH Veteran trainers.

Non-Profit organization, certified through Assistance Dogs International to train & place Service dogs with Veterans experiencing PTSD, TBI, or Mobility challenges. Paws for Purple Hearts (PPH) is the first program of its kind to offer therapeutic intervention for Veterans and active-duty Service Members by teaching those with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), an

d Military Sexual Trauma (MST) to train service dogs for their comrades with combat-related injuries. Under the guidance of PPH instructors, participants engage with specially-bred Golden and Labrador Retriever puppies. Together they undergo an intensive 18-to-24-month service dog training regimen—learning more than 90 commands–while the Veterans reintegrate into civilian life. The service dogs trained in the PPH program are partnered with Veterans or Service Members with combat-related disabilities at no cost, providing a new steadfast companion and a true partner. PPH dogs provide independence and security as they perform tasks like tugging open doors, switching on and off lights, and picking up dropped items.

Today, August 7th, is Purple Heart Day.
Designed by George Washington himself, the Badge of Military Merit was first awarded to Sergeants William Brown, Elijah Churchill, and Daniel Bissell in 1783. The award was designated for soldiers who exhibited, "not only instances of unusual gallantry in battle, but also extraordinary fidelity and essential service in any way."
The Badge of Military Merit was the first of it's kind honoring "common soldiers."
150 years later, this award, which had all but been forgotten, was revived by US Army Chief of Staff Douglas MacArthur and renamed to the Purple Heart. MacArthur set the criterion for the award as follows: “A wound, which necessitates treatment by a medical officer, and which is received in action with an enemy of the United States, or as a result of an act of such enemy, may…be construed as resulting from a singularly meritorious act of essential service.”
Since it's inception in 1783, there have been approximately 1.8 million Purple Heart medals awarded to service members. Today, and everyday, we honor those who were willing to make the ultimate sacrifice to preserve our freedoms and way of life. At PPH we constantly look for ways to serve our military community, and days like today remind us of how important our mission is. Thank you to all those who served and those that continue to do so. We also recognize and thank the families of our military personnel.

It's a puppy palooza here at PPH Alaska! A huge THANK YOU to our friends at Kendall Ford Anchorage for providing our puppy strollers and making transportation a breeze.

We are excited to welcome our newest service puppies in training - Yasmin and Zucker!

Zucker is approaching 9 weeks old. He loves playing with the other dogs and is not afraid to tell you what's on his mind. Zucker is excelling in the beginning stages of his training and we are excited to see him progress and develop his skillset.

Yasmin was born on April 1st, but her progress is no joke! She is learning her commands quickly and has an eager nose that is continually wanting to explore her new home. She is a cautious pup but once she is comfortable she loves her playtime!

If you are interested in meeting our newest pups, drop by our facility on Dowling Road, fill out a volunteer application, or give us a call!

On this Memorial Day, take a moment to remember those who fought for our county and did not come home. Let us never forget those who paid the ultimate sacrifice so that we may enjoy our freedoms and let us not take those freedoms for granted.

Alaska - are you and your pups volcano ready? Odin and the PPH pups sure are.
When Mt. Spur goes off, there are a few safety precautions to keep in mind when it comes to our fury friends.
If it can harm you, it can harm your pet! Volcanic ash in the air can cause respiratory harm, invest in a doggy mask.
The chemicals in the ash can irritate skin and paw pads - cover them up with booties and a jacket.
Make sure to keep the ash out of their eyes as well! A nice pair of doggy goggles will help with that.
Be sure to have plenty of extra food and water, some businesses may close and we don't want our pups to go hungry.
