When Mary Jane first came to Better Health Animal Hospital, she faced multiple challenges affecting both her comfort and quality of life. As a bulldog, she was struggling with Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS), making every breath more difficult than it should be. She also had a severe corkscrew tail that had become deeply embedded, causing chronic irritation, inflammation, and discomfort.

In this case, Dr. Yoo treated a French Bulldog whose enlarged tonsils were making it harder to breathe. After a thorough examination, he determined that the soft palate and everted saccules were not contributing to the airway obstruction, meaning a full BOAS procedure wasn’t necessary.

Instead, a tonsillectomy (removal of the tonsils) was the right solution to help improve this Frenchie’s breathing and overall comfort.

💡 Did you know?
Enlarged tonsils can partially block the airway, especially in brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds like French Bulldogs, English Bulldogs, and Pugs. While not every dog with breathing issues needs BOAS surgery, identifying the exact cause is key to choosing the best treatment.

Signs your dog may be struggling to breathe:
🐶 Loud snoring or noisy breathing
🐶 Gagging or coughing
🐶 Difficulty exercising
🐶 Excessive panting
🐶 Labored breathing, especially in warm weather

Meet Winston! When his family noticed his cherry eyes becoming more pronounced, they made the proactive decision to have them treated before they led to additional irritation, discomfort, and potential long-term eye complications.

In this video, Dr. Yoo walks you through Winston’s cherry eye surgery and explains why early treatment can make a significant difference. The goal isn’t simply to improve appearance, it’s to preserve the function of the tear gland, protect the eye, and help keep your dog comfortable for years to come.

Cherry eye is especially common in breeds like Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, English Bulldogs, Boston Terriers, Cocker Spaniels, and Beagles. While it may not seem urgent at first, delaying treatment can increase the risk of chronic irritation, inflammation, and dry eye.
