It's spring, meaning pollen and baby animals are everywhere! Our instinct is to help, but when should we intervene?

For baby rabbits:
• A 4-inch rabbit with open eyes and erect ears is independent and should be left alone.
• Leave uninjured babies in undisturbed nests.
• Help if there's injury, signs of being caught by a cat or dog, or if orphaned (use a disturbance test).
Don’t remove a baby rabbit unless you're sure it’s abandoned, as most die in rehab. To check, place twigs over the nest—if disturbed, the mother has returned.

For baby birds:
• If the nest is nearby, return the bird to it. If not, leave it where found or move it to a shaded spot for parents to return.
• Call FAMC for help if the bird is gasping, bleeding, has been injured by a dog or cat or shows signs of distress (360-293-2186).

We're now almost 2 weeks into our new management software and while there have been some bumps in the road, we feel it's going smoother than we hoped. We do continue to appreciate you all for your patience as continue to work through any changes that have arisen. One of our changes we wanted to make you aware of us our new Pet Portal.

Previously, we had Petly where you could sign in to view your pet's profile, but we are now transitioning to a new Pet Portal which integrates with our new system. It works similarly to Petly, but with a more user-friendly look to it. There could be some weird things as you view your pet's chart so don't hesitate to reach out with concerns and we will get them updated. Our website has been updated to reflect these changes!

Our Story

Fidalgo Animal Medical Center was founded in 1978 by Dr. Robert Bjerk who after a few years had Dr. Bill Testerman join him as a partner. In 2005, Dr. Pauli Bezzola and Dr. Ian Marshall purchased the clinic, and continue to provide high quality veterinary care for the small animals of Anacortes and the surrounding areas. Fidalgo Animal Medical was opened with the understanding that pets are part of the family and that they deserve the best medical care possible. We continue to work with that philosophy today. Our clinic has multiple veterinarians and a fully trained support staff, including licensed veterinary technicians. We advocate quality medicine, client education, community support and the bond between humans and their pets. As of 2017 we are also AAHA Accredited. From all of us at Fidalgo Animal Medical Center, we thank you for visiting our website and hope to see you at our clinic!
