Hello, I'm Tux. I've had a difficult life. I was born into an outdoor feral colony in Emporia in 2020. The caretaker noticed that my back leg was badly injured and required medical care when I was just a kitten. She caught me and contacted FHPR for help. Then came the bad news: my doctor stated that I was going to lose my leg, and on top of that, I was FIV positive. My new home would be the FIV room at Forever Home Pet Rescue, where I would be safe from predators.

About 10 days ago, during the morning feedings, we found Tux unable to move. He accepted help, knowing that he was in trouble, even though he detests being touched. The exam and X-rays showed that there were no broken bones, but there was swelling. He spent one night and came home the next day to rest. He wasn't eating or drinking, which was our first obstacle. It took about 3 days and several varieties of food for him to eat on his own. On day 4, he sat up on his front legs. Today, he began drinking water on his own. There is progress every day, although the one back leg is not showing much promise. He does have a stubborn streak, so time will tell. We'll keep you posted. 🙏

Please keep an eye out for this old guy.

Please consider adopting these seniors from the shelter. I'm sure they are very confused and scared. They need you.

We lost our sweet Joe Tuesday. He had been with us just shy of 10 years.

He ended up at the Emporia Animal Shelter when he was a few months old with a 'beyond' chronic nasal issue. He was nicknamed Snotty Joe but was the sweetest and friendliest guy. Flint Hills Animal Advocates (then Friends of the Emporia Animal Shelter) agreed to help with medical costs to see what could be done for him. After X-rays and blood work, it was determined there was a polyp very deep in his nasal cavity, too deep for surgery locally. Off to K-State he went. They removed the polyp and we were all hoping for the best. There were a few hiccups in the recovery, including a massive bleeding episode the night he came home, but we made it through. He was the sweetest guy and he had the biggest heart to go with his big feet. Our goal, of course, was to get him his forever home where he could be someone's lap cat. As time went on and after many more Dr. visits, it was clear Joe was going to be a part of the FHPR family. We were more than happy to have him in our lives even though it wasn't long enough.

Tuesday our sweet Joe's life took a bad turn and he suffered a brain aneurysm or a stroke. Rest well sweet boy. We will miss you. 💔

Feline Fact Friday in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

Did you know that mammary tumors account for the 3rd most common type of cancer found in cats?

Unfortunately, the majority of mammary tumors (90%) are malignant cancers. 😢

Spaying a female cat BEFORE the first heat cycle (typically between 3-5 months of age) can significantly reduce the risk of mammary cancer in our feline friends.

Do you know of a female kitty that needs to be spayed?
