Why It’s Important to Monitor Your Pond in Winter❄
Even though your pond may look calm and quiet during the winter months, it still requires attention to remain healthy. Monitoring your pond throughout the colder season helps prevent problems that can carry over into spring. Ice, debris, and poor circulation can reduce oxygen levels, stressing your fish and aquatic life. By keeping an eye on your pond, you ensure that conditions remain stable and safe until warmer weather returns.
Cold Water Bacteria
Adding cold water beneficial bacteria is one of the best steps you can take in winter. These specialized bacteria remain active in colder temperatures, breaking down fish waste, decaying leaves, and other organic matter that settle at the bottom. This helps reduce sludge buildup, improves water clarity, and creates a healthier environment for your fish while also setting the stage for a cleaner, easier spring start-up.

Barley extract is another important tool during winter. As it naturally breaks down, it releases compounds that help keep pond water balanced and discourage excess nutrients from fueling algae growth. Using barley extract regularly supports water clarity and helps maintain a healthy ecosystem year-round.
In short: Winter pond care isn’t just about surviving the season, it’s about preparing your pond to thrive in the spring. Regular monitoring, along with the use of cold water bacteria and barley extract, will keep your pond healthier, clearer, and easier to maintain.

❄Cold Water Pond Fish Feeding
Everyone has a theory or advice about this topic but this is what we recommend! 👍🏻
As the weather cools and water temperatures drop in the fall, your pond fish’s metabolism slows down. This means they digest food much more slowly and require less to stay healthy.
Once the water temperature (not air temperature) consistently falls below 55°F, switch to a wheat germ-based fish food, which is easier for them to digest. Feed only small amounts that your fish can eat within a few minutes.
When the temperature reaches around 45°F or lower, stop feeding altogether. The fish will become inactive and rely on their stored body fat to get through the winter. Feeding during cold temperatures can cause undigested food to sit in their stomachs, leading to health problems.
In short:
• Above 55°F: Feed regular food.
• 55°F–45°F: Use wheat germ food, sparingly.
• Below 45°F: Stop feeding.
Keeping a thermometer in your pond helps you know when to make these changes and ensures your fish stay healthy through winter. Thermometers will also help in determining when it is time to switch to a cold water beneficial bacteria from a normal season beneficial bacteria.
Holly Days offers several types of pond thermometers, including floating, sinking, and the Smart Pond Thermometer. For accurate readings, it's helpful to monitor temperatures at both the top and bottom of your pond since water temperature varies with depth and season.
The Aquascape Smart Pond Thermometer connects to your smartphone or tablet via the Aquascape Smart Control App, giving you instant temperature data to help manage fish feeding and water treatments. It also features a built-in display for checking temperature directly, and can trigger other smart devices based on water temperature.
