Cats need to be kept up to date on their annual vaccines, but what vaccines do they require and what do these vaccines protect them from?

Rabies: Rabies is an extremely dangerous and deadly viral disease, which is why Texas law requires cats to be kept up to date on their vaccination against it. We offer one-year and three-year protection against rabies. The rabies vaccine is considered a core vaccine and highly recommended for all cats starting at about 12-16 weeks old.

FVRCP: This vaccine protects against three diseases common to cats: Feline viral rhinotracheitis (FVR), calicivirus infection (C), and panleukopenia (P). Feline viral rhinotracheitis is a dangerous upper respiratory disease. The calicivirus infection can range from a mild upper-respiratory infection to severe pneumonia and is very contagious. Panleukopenia, also known as feline distemper, is very contagious and extremely deadly especially to kittens. This is considered a core vaccine and highly recommended for all cats starting at about 8 weeks old.

Leukemia: Leukemia is an incurable and highly contagious viral disease, and the leading killer of cats in the US. The leukemia vaccine is considered a core vaccine and highly recommended for all cats starting at about 12 weeks old.

Dogs need to get up-to-date on their vaccines every year, but what vaccines do they require and what do each of them protect against? And how do you know what vaccines are best for your dog? We offer five different vaccines for dogs: rabies, distemper/parvo, lepto, bordetella, and canine influenza.

Distemper/Parvo: The Canine Distemper/Parvo (DHPP) vaccine protects against four harmful diseases: Canine distemper, infections hepatitis, parainfluenza, and parvovirus. Parvovirus (often simply called parvo) is particularly deadly, especially to puppies. And once it’s present in your home or yard, it is extremely difficult to get rid of. This is considered a core vaccine and highly recommended for dogs every year starting at 8 weeks old. Older dogs who have received this vaccine consistently throughout their life may not need to have this boostered, but many boarding and grooming locations require it.

Lepto: Leptospirosis, often simply called lepto, is an infection dogs can contract from your own backyard. A dog can contract lepto by coming into contact with the urine of wildlife such as squirrels. This is considered a core vaccine and highly recommended for dogs every year starting at 12 weeks old.

Bordetella: Bordetella, also referred to as kennel cough or canine cough, is a highly contagious upper-respiratory infection spread from one dog to another. This vaccine is required by many boarding and grooming locations. It’s considered a core vaccine, and highly recommended for dogs every year starting at 8 weeks old.

Canine Influenza: Canine influenza is similar to the flu that humans contract, and this vaccine protects against it. The Canine influenza vaccine is highly recommended for dogs who will be around other dogs in situations like boarding, grooming, and dog parks.
