🐴 Cherokee Update 🐴

After 5 days in the ICU at Auburn University, Cherokee is now home. 🙌🏻 He had some post op complications from his eye surgery and had to undergo a few procedures this week, but we feel he is now on the road to recovery. The next few days, even weeks, is a crucial time for his recovery, and we are praying for no set backs. We cannot say enough good things about the care he received at John Thomas Vaughn Large Animal Teaching Hospital and his team of veterinarians. 💙🧡

Cherokee Update 🐴💙

Monday Cherokee went to Auburn University for surgery on both eyes to remove cancerous lesions on his eyeballs and the tissue around the eyes. Surgery went well, but overnight Monday he did not eat or p**p as well as they would want. He also was showing to be in a great deal of pain and had a lot of swelling around his eyes. So this morning they adjusted his pain medication and let him go outside to graze for a little bit. The vets said he seemed to enjoy his time outside in the grass. He has also spiked a fever today.. So with all that, he will be staying for a few days to recover. If all goes well he will be coming home at the end of the week. Please send your positive thoughts and prayers for healing and comfort to our big blue eyed boy! ❤️‍🩹

You serious, Clark?! 🐾🦴

Everyone welcome, Clark! He is a 3 year old Karakachan livestock guardian dog. He has been protecting his farm since he was a puppy, but he was in need of a new farm since his owners have to relocate for work. He will be our goat herd’s new protector and make a great addition to the farm.

A few fun facts about the Karakachan breed. The Karakachan, also known as the Bulgarian Shepherd, is an ancient, large, and muscular livestock guardian dog breed from Bulgaria, known for its loyalty, protective instincts, and ability to defend herds against predators like wolves and bears. They are one of Europe's oldest dog breeds, with ancestors dating back to the third millennium BC.

Cherokee went for his eye specialist checkup yesterday, and we did not get the news we were hoping for… His eye comfort has improved, but even so there are still areas in both eyes consistent with squamous cell carcinoma. Dr. Carastro is referring us to Auburn University for surgery on both eyes since her Alabama clinic is not set up for large animals. In the meantime, we will continue his steroids and UV protection to keep him comfortable.
