We love when we are able to let people meet one of our pigs, especially when it is their first time meeting one! It is such a special experience for everyone involved!

Tomorrow, we will have Ramona at our Piggy Palooza event at Bentley's Pet Stuff Schaumburg
From 11 to 3pm!

We just want to take a minute to talk about all the ways that we ensure Ramona's experience there is also a positive one! It is our top priority to make sure we are creating an experience that puts Ramona's well being at the forefront.

Here are the things we do to be sure that we are doing things the right way:

➡️ We only ever bring extremely social and outgoing pigs to events - pigs that we know ENJOY the attention. 
Many pigs are shy with new people, so we would NEVER bring those pigs to an event.
Ramona is our most outgoing, social pig!

And as most of you probably already know, we do not bring pigs to events very often at all.

➡️ We have a very specific setup that we use to ensure that we are giving Ramona full bodily autonomy. 

We use our transport van that is spacious in the back. We then put up a little piece of fencing at the door's opening.

This makes a barrier between Ramona and the person who is meeting her. She has tons of space to retreat and lay down if she decides that she does not want to engage with people anymore. 

It is always HER choice.
She has the option of whether or not she wants to engage with someone, and she has ample room to chill out on her own if she wants to. This is to ensure she retains her bodily autonomy!

➡️ We pay VERY close attention to her body language. If she is getting upset- she gets to leave and go home- full stop. 

➡️ We have a bunch of solar powered mini fans that we can set up to ensure it does not get hot or stuffy in the van for her. 
She also will have a big pile of blankets to lay in. 

➡️ We will have someone stationed there with Ramona to monitor every single interaction.
At tomorrow's event, we will have the lovely Maureen Kinsella there with Ramona!

It is so important to us that animal interactions are facilitated in the RIGHT way! 🐷

🚨 New rescues: Stella and Lenny!! 🚨

We have been working on this case for a long time, but only now are we ready to start sharing Stella and Linny's story...

Stella and Lenny are bonded 7 year old mini pigs who love one another dearly. This past winter, we were contacted by a men’s recovery facility about these 2 pigs. They were meant to be therapy animals but ended up neglected.

They are both horribly overweight and had terribly overgrown hooves. It was clear that Stella and Linny were in desperately need of better care and attention.

At the time we were contacted about these girls, all of our foster partners were full. But we wanted to do everything we could to help them.

Our wonderful board member, Annie, made regular visits to the facility to look after the pair and properly winterize their enclosure. We also immediately scheduled a hoof trim with Flip Side Hoof care, who worked hard to help their hooves.

FINALLY this spring, we were able to get Stella and Lenny into one of our amazing foster homes with volunteers, Chess and Goose! We have an amazing team of board members and volunteers on site who made the loading and transport possible for their rescue journey.

Once in our care, we realized that Stella had a pretty bad limp on her front leg. We got her into the University of Illinois Large Animal Vet, where they examined her and gave her a trail dose of meloxicam. The meds hardly helped.

So our sweet Stella had to journey back at the vet for a CT scan! It was found that she has severe arthritis and only about 30% of her elbow function.
They prescribed her another pain med on top of the meloxicam to see if this would help her mobility and pain levels.

There is no cure for arthritis. There are only options to treat the symptoms. But there are options out there that we want to explore for Stella, like possible joint injections.

Stella (and Linny) have FINALLY been rescued after years of neglect. There is no way we are letting Stella go without a fight!!

When: Saturday June 20th, from 11am to 3pm

Piggy Palooza is a family-friendly community fundraiser event. All the money raised will be put towards the veterinary care and medical expenses of our current rescue cases.

There will be vegan treats, a raffle, our merch table, a kid's activity table, and an informational table where you can learn more about CPR!
We will have a special guest with us- Ramona the pig 💖
