Canine Assistants

Canine Assistants Canine Assistants provides service dogs for children and adults. However, she was unable to obtain a service dog because of geographical limitations.

Jennifer Arnold first recognized the need for this program when she was sixteen years old and diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. She needed to use a wheelchair for several years and came to realize how dependent she was on others. Jennifer found it difficult to perform simple tasks, such as picking up dropped items, opening doors and turning on and off lights. She had heard of an organization in

California that was training dogs to help people like her with those basic tasks. Jennifer has dedicated her efforts to building Canine Assistants, since she founded it in 1991. In that time the organization has placed over 1,700 service dogs nationally, reached more than 400,000 students through disabilities awareness educational presentations, and provide communities with over 120,000 hours of animal assisted therapy. Approximately 95% of all donations are directed towards the various programs and sponsorships. Most Canine Assistants service dogs are born, raised, and trained at our facility in Milton, Georgia, while some are occasionally adopted from local organizations or breeders. The majority of our service dogs are retrievers, including goldens, golden/lab mixes and goldendoodles.

FEATURE FRIDAY: hospital edition! 🏥 Meet Garth, the newest facility dog ! Garth has been working with his handlers, Dr. Heather and Ms. Kylie, since he was placed in November 2024. Dr. Heather shared, “Garth works in The Heart Center and he has become a critically important part of it, for both patients and the medical team. Patients are often in the Heart Center for long admissions and he is a loving consistent presence throughout their healing journey. He is a jack of all trades at work, assisting PT, OT, Child Life, and Psychology throughout his day. He loves all his patients, but he gets extra excited when parents bring their babies back for a visit with him. He remembers each and every one!” Good boy, Garth! ❤️🐕‍🦺

Last week, our graduates Wallace, Gloria, Luigi, and Poe were fortunate enough to attend a special screening of the new movie on a rooftop in Los Angeles. Our partners made this incredible event happen, and as always, had Canine Assistants in mind. We are so grateful, and we *highly* recommend you go see Superman, which features his canine partner, Krypto. 🐾❤️

FEATURE FRIDAY: hospital edition! 🏥 Meet Amanda and her facility dog, Patsy! These two were paired together last November and have been working side-by-side at Children's Mercy ever since. Amanda shared, “Patsy works closely with both dialysis and behavioral health patients. She might start her day helping a patient become familiar with the dialysis process (with her superhero cape that connects her to a model dialysis machine!) and then transition to supporting a behavioral health patient. She often helps them learn how to regulate their feelings. Patsy helps patients in both of these populations have a consistent companion, a trusting relationship, and a sense of normalcy. At the end of the day, Patsy cultivates a space of connection when words might fail.” Good girl, Patsy! 🐕‍🦺❤️

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT 🔦 Meet Blazie! She became a certified CA volunteer in 2024 while earning her Master’s degree at the University of Georgia. That’s right, she commuted from Athens to Alpharetta to work with our dogs! Blazie shared, “I learned about Canine Assistants from my friend and fellow child life graduate student, Kelbe, along with her son/bestie, Luigi. I fell in love with the bond-based approach and all of the sweet dogs who would often accompany her to classes. I knew I had to get involved! My favorite part about volunteering with Canine Assistants is being able to bring dogs with me to the UGA campus and teaching others about CA’s mission! I have loved getting to know each of the dogs I have had, and it has been so fulfilling to see how much of an impact they have on my peers, colleagues, and community! As I transition to the next chapter of my life, Canine Assistants will be the part that I miss the most!” We will miss you, too, Blazie! Thank you for the impact you made on our dogs. 🎓❤️🐾 Go Dawgs!

We are excited to welcome our newest and fifth Canine Health and Medical Pals (CHAMPs) dog, Cash! Cash was trained at Canine Assistants in Georgia. He was part of a litter of puppies named after country music singers; his siblings are named Garth, Conway, Loretta, Patsy and Dolly.

Cash will help support patients in a variety of ways—attending nutrition counseling and exams, providing distraction during long clinic visits and coping/support during conversations about medical nutrition therapy interventions (such as the need for tube feeding). We also see him helping with body positivity/acceptance (as a non-judgmental presence) and his presence will help reduce stress for patients with nutrition challenges. Cash will be a boost for patients in many areas throughout American Family Children’s Hospital and our outpatient pediatric specialty clinics.
