Canine Assistants

Canine Assistants Canine Assistants provides service dogs for children and adults. However, she was unable to obtain a service dog because of geographical limitations.

Jennifer Arnold first recognized the need for this program when she was sixteen years old and diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. She needed to use a wheelchair for several years and came to realize how dependent she was on others. Jennifer found it difficult to perform simple tasks, such as picking up dropped items, opening doors and turning on and off lights. She had heard of an organization in

California that was training dogs to help people like her with those basic tasks. Jennifer has dedicated her efforts to building Canine Assistants, since she founded it in 1991. In that time the organization has placed over 1,700 service dogs nationally, reached more than 400,000 students through disabilities awareness educational presentations, and provide communities with over 120,000 hours of animal assisted therapy. Approximately 95% of all donations are directed towards the various programs and sponsorships. Most Canine Assistants service dogs are born, raised, and trained at our facility in Milton, Georgia, while some are occasionally adopted from local organizations or breeders. The majority of our service dogs are retrievers, including goldens, golden/lab mixes and goldendoodles.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT 🔦 Meet Brigitte, a Canine Assistants volunteer since 2018. She shared, “My daughter had to spend several weeks in Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta when she was 14; meeting the dogs from CA that were working in the hospital was one of the few bright spots in some difficult times for our family.” When asked about her experience as a volunteer, Brigitte said, “I love developing a relationship with my foster puppy, discovering their individual personality, and figuring out how I can help them learn. I also enjoy meeting people when I am out with a CA puppy, and sharing a few moments with these special dogs.” Thank you for all you do, Brigitte! We’re lucky to have you! ❤️🦮

Today is National Chocolate Chip Day! 🍪 We thought today would be a great day to check in with our graduate, Chocolate Chip (aka CC) who works at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Here’s what her handler, Shawn, had to say: “CC has been staying busy helping child life with patients in the dental clinic with x-rays, sitting in the chair, dental exams, and showing them how to brush teeth. She continues her great work in transplant, leukemia, and hematology areas as well as working in the psychology clinic. Still a master at medical play, she will fetch the stethoscope, blood pressure cuff, and show kids how to take medicine. She enjoys relaxation, has gone camping, and spends time regrouping in the country!” Good girl, CC! ❤️🦮

It’s Administrative Professionals Week, and we wouldn’t miss the opportunity to recognize Lindsey, the glue that holds it all together at Canine Assistants. Lindsey started as personal assistant to our founder, Jennifer Arnold, but she quickly took on more and more responsibility. Frankly, you would be hard-pressed to find someone at Canine Assistants that Lindsey *hasn’t* helped. She is selfless, kind, hard-working, and a truly wonderful representative for the organization. Thank you for everything you do, Lindsey! ❤️🦮🐾
