New Year’s Eve is often associated with fireworks. But in many parts of Milton, such explosive overhead bangs remain prohibited even over the upcoming holiday.

Earlier this year, a new state law took effect enabling municipalities to restrict firework use to protect horses. The City of Milton subsequently enacted a measure prohibiting someone from setting off fireworks within 200 yards of the border of any property that has equines. (The term “equines” includes horses, donkeys, ponies, and mules.) The map accompanying this post gives you a good sense of where such farms, and related restrictions, are.

Even before that action, loud fireworks could only be lit on a handful of days in Milton. New Year’s Eve (from 10 a.m. to 1 a.m. into the next day/year) and New Year’s Day (from 10 a.m. to midnight) are among those. And for locations that are further than 200 yards from an equine property, fireworks can be set off on those days and times in Milton.

Still, because of the abundance of horse farms here, many parts of Milton are now off-limits for fireworks every day and night of the year.

For more information, visit www.miltonga.gov/Fireworks. And if you notice what you suspect is illicit firework use, you can call the Milton Police (including at their 24/7 non-emergency number of 678-297-6300.)

Updated 7/1/25: The sign supply has been depleted.

🎆 If you're planning to set off fireworks, take note of a new update to the noise ordinance!

Fireworks are now not allowed within 200 yards of equine facilities (that’s barns, arenas, and pastures where horses are kept). The goal is to help keep our four-legged neighbors safe and stress-free.

This update follows new state legislation and was approved by the Board of Commissioners on June 17.

Yesterday, the House passed a revised and final version of my legislation protecting suburban horse farms in North Fulton and across Georgia. The bill allows cities and counties to prohibit fireworks up to 200 yards of any equine facility.

This is important to communities like Milton and Southeast Cherokee where our horse farms are particularly affected by loud, sudden noises, putting riders and horses at risk.
