The American Wirehair started as a spontaneous mutation found in two kittens born with kinky coats in a barn in upstate NY in 1966. Breeders used American Shorthairs as an outcross to establish this new breed. However, it differs from the American Shorthair in having a high cheekbones and slanted eyes, in addition to its springy, coarse, wired coat. Each hair on the dense coat is crimped, hooked, or bent. Breeders created this breed, and they are essential to preserving it also. It is one of the rarest breeds in CFA. With that in mind, straight-coated American Wirehairs are now shown as a division of the original breed. The coat is still dense and thick, but is straight. The hard work of breeders created this unique breed, and their continued efforts to grow the breed will preserve it. The brown cats originating with Wong Mau became the basis for the Burmese and they were later exported to England where fanciers there continued to develop them. However, the European Siamese breeders also included red, cream, and various colors of tortoiseshell in their colors. These Burmese (which are called European Burmese in the US, and simply Burmese elsewhere in the world) developed a larger body, a more blunt wedge-shaped head, and eyes with a unique shape. They continued their journey eastward towards Australia and New Zealand, finally making their way back to the US in the form of what we refer to as the European Burmese in 1993.
