Some dogs leave paw prints on your heart.
Others leave entire chapters.
Chewy was one of those dogs.
For the last few months, every time I left her house, I found myself saying goodbye a little differently. Not because I wanted to believe the end was near, but because I could see it in her eyes. The slowing down. The tiredness. The quiet wisdom that only comes with age.
She reminded me so much of my Lola.
There was something about her gentle soul that pulled at my heartstrings from the very beginning. The kind of dog that didn’t have to do anything extraordinary to be loved. She simply existed, and that was enough.
As pet sitters, we walk into our clients’ homes to care for their pets, but every now and then, a pet becomes so much more than part of the job. They become part of your story.
Chewy became part of mine.
Yesterday, she passed away peacefully in her sleep.
As heartbreaking as it is to say goodbye, I am grateful. Grateful that her final moments were spent in the comfort of home. Grateful that she wasn’t scared. Grateful that she simply drifted off, surrounded by the love that carried her through her entire life.
The truth is, I have been saying little goodbyes to her for months now. Every visit. Every head scratch. Every quiet moment together. Somewhere deep down, I knew our time was becoming precious.
Today my heart is heavy, but it is also full.
Full of gratitude for the privilege of knowing her.
Full of love for the memories she leaves behind.
Full of respect for a beautiful soul who lived a life well loved.
Run free, sweet girl.
And if Lola happened to be waiting for you on the other side, I have a feeling she was one of the first to greet you.
Rest easy sweet lady ♥️🐾🌈
