GDV (Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus), or bloat, can progress rapidly and is often fatal without immediate treatment. It causes the stomach to fill with gas and twist, cutting off blood flow and leading to shock. Time is critical!

Common signs include:
🔹 A suddenly swollen or tight abdomen
🔹 Unproductive retching or attempts to vomit, and/or Drooling
🔹 Restlessness, pacing, or panting
🔹 Collapse or signs of distress

If you notice these symptoms, don’t wait. Call Family Friends Vet Hospital at (616) 575-6520 or head directly to the nearest emergency animal hospital. Acting quickly can save your dog’s life.

Setting up a puppy-proofed area is one of the best things you can do when welcoming a new puppy (yours or a foster)! Use baby gates or a playpen to create a cozy "home base" just for them—complete with soft bedding, a water bowl, and long-lasting (but safe) chews.

Place this space near where your family spends the most time. It helps your puppy learn independence without feeling isolated (this is my personal morning room!)—and lets you go about your day knowing they’re safe and secure.

✨ Pro Tip:
Think about...
🔹 Which areas of your home could be gated off for now? (for me it was my entire second level, and 1/3 of the first)
🔹 What needs to be puppy-proofed? (Cords are tempting.)
🔹 When during the day can you actively supervise—and when is it safer for your pup to rest in their own space?

For those first few weeks, this little setup becomes your puppy’s main hangout. It’s where they rest, recharge, and begin to learn about life with you.

**** Anya Update****
If she is pregnant, she would be 2 weeks along (dogs are only pregnant for 9 weeks😳). Once fertilized, embryos move from the upper portion of the female dog’s uterus down to the lower part. They stay here for the first and second week or so of the pregnancy. They are just “floating” and haven’t implanted yet. Implantation happens around week 3 … we will be watching for signs of morning sickness. Her confirmation ultrasound is scheduled just before her 4 th week - July 9🤞.

Day 2 of breeding resulted in another AI. Now it’s just a matter of waiting. Anya was started on a “pregnancy kibble” when she started her heat cycle to give her the extras she needed. She will continue on this until her ultrasound in 4 weeks. We are headed home. Besides dealing with the rain, the dogs have done well with their time on the car. 🤞for a positive pregnancy confirmation 🐶

So, yesterday ended up being a 15 hour ride due to doggy stretch/ potty breaks. Optimal time for breeding is a 24-72 hour window from ovulation which would have been Thursday morning per her numbers. We finally settled in a little after midnight and were up at 5 to breed at 6am. Today I ended up doing a side by side artificial insemination. Tomorrow morning we will try again for a natural tie (if not I’ll do AI again) before heading home. Ace is quite a friendly, handsome fellow. Anya was quite impressed❤️

Day 9 of Anya’s heat cycle… WOO HOO, she has ovulated!!!! She was close yesterday so because of our 12 hour drive we decided to head to New York after her morning blood draw. We just got the call that her number is where it’s supposed to be. Optimal time for breeding after ovulation is a 24-72 hour window. Anya will be meeting up with Ace tomorrow and Saturday morning 🥰 … as you can see Maverick is a bed hog🤣
