Here at the Lakes Area Humane Society, we know that welcoming a new pet into your life can be an exciting and fulfilling experience. However, we are also aware that this transition can be overwhelming and stressful for both the pet and the new owner. Most pets will need time to adjust to their new surroundings.

Below is a “3-3-3” guideline to help new owners during this transitional period. Newly adopted pets might be confused, nervous or scared as they experience new sights, smells and sounds. It is very important that adequate time, patience, consistency and positive reinforcement is given to adjust and build trust with their new family. Doing so, will ensure life-long, fulfilling relationships!

The First Three Days:
Pets need the first three days to decompress from all the recent changes in their life. It’s important to give them plenty of space and time to acclimate to their new surroundings.

The First Three Weeks:
The next three weeks is when your new furry family member begins to learn your routine. After the initial three days, you can begin to slowly introduce your new pet to other pets and family members. It’s important to remember to keep their routine consistent and give them positive reinforcement.

The First Three Months:
During the next three months continue to reinforce good behavior and gradually increase their exposure to new experiences. This a good time to work on a routine for training, exercise, and playtime to help develop good habits and build confidence.

It is important to remember that every pet is different. So, some of the steps in this guideline may take a bit longer for your pet, but continue to be patient with their progress!

It’s beautiful weather to go for a walk! If you work long hours during the day but still want your pups to see the sunshine schedule a visit with us!

Walks promote a healthy way for your pup to release their energy. New sights and smells stimulate your dog and get their noses and minds going. Your dog will also be more relaxed and less stressed after a walk.

We will walk your dog as far as safely possible for them. We don’t push your fur baby to walk further than what they can and we take breaks when they need. We also work on training techniques such as sit and stay.

Schedule a meet and greet via messenger or call/text 320-298-4131

Video featuring Henry and Cleo! These bonded pups love their hour long walks! We usually go three miles and they’re the happiest pups when they get home. 🥰
