Lately, my schedule has been packed, but I truly wouldn’t have it any other way! Whether I’m staying overnight with adorable pets, walking dogs throughout the day, or making house visits several times, the days are just flying by! There’s nothing quite like the joy of bringing smiles to the faces of these furry friends. Here are some photos of the precious pups I’ve had the pleasure of caring for. 🥰

Just a few photos from this last weekend! Had lots of fun with all sorts of furry friends!

Here at the Lakes Area Humane Society, we know that welcoming a new pet into your life can be an exciting and fulfilling experience. However, we are also aware that this transition can be overwhelming and stressful for both the pet and the new owner. Most pets will need time to adjust to their new surroundings.

Below is a “3-3-3” guideline to help new owners during this transitional period. Newly adopted pets might be confused, nervous or scared as they experience new sights, smells and sounds. It is very important that adequate time, patience, consistency and positive reinforcement is given to adjust and build trust with their new family. Doing so, will ensure life-long, fulfilling relationships!

The First Three Days:
Pets need the first three days to decompress from all the recent changes in their life. It’s important to give them plenty of space and time to acclimate to their new surroundings.

The First Three Weeks:
The next three weeks is when your new furry family member begins to learn your routine. After the initial three days, you can begin to slowly introduce your new pet to other pets and family members. It’s important to remember to keep their routine consistent and give them positive reinforcement.

The First Three Months:
During the next three months continue to reinforce good behavior and gradually increase their exposure to new experiences. This a good time to work on a routine for training, exercise, and playtime to help develop good habits and build confidence.

It is important to remember that every pet is different. So, some of the steps in this guideline may take a bit longer for your pet, but continue to be patient with their progress!
