Taught a lesson today on one of my favorite Fjords, Tater Tot! I love helping students discover how to use their body more and their reins less to create a softer, more fluid, and connected ride. It’s amazing how much the horse-human conversation improves when we start listening with our whole body.

Took Twist out for a hand walk around the hayfield today. We’ve been lunging on level ground lately, so I wanted to get him moving with a little more intention by walking up and down some gentle hills.

We added in some halts, backing, and turns on both the haunches and forehand to keep his mind and body engaged. After about 35 minutes, he was starting to sweat and the horseflies were getting relentless, so we wrapped it up.

He was such a good boy today.

I climbed up on the container today and for a moment, I wondered if they’d be bothered.

Turns out, I didn’t need to worry.

When your relationship is built on trust, a change in perspective doesn’t shake the foundation.

Today I brought my saddle over to Twist. No halter, no lead rope, just us in the pasture.

Even when Tiger wandered off to graze, he stood quietly and let me tack him up, completely at liberty. Not many horses will do that. But Twist did, and he did so with calm, relaxed body language.

It wasn’t always this way. When I bought him, I was told he was aggressive, hated being worked, and would run people over or kick to get out of doing anything.

What changed?
It wasn't the horse; it was the conversation.

Consent in horsemanship doesn’t mean never asking.
It means building enough trust that when you do ask…
they’re comfortable saying “yes.”

These numbers can seriously impact both horses and humans. What are your go-to strategies for keeping your horses cool and safe in this kind of weather? And how do you take care of yourself during chores?

With Twist on summer pasture and already carrying a few extra pounds, it was time to break out the grazing muzzle.

I picked up a GG Equine muzzle from SmartPak, and so far, it seems to be doing the trick. Twist isn’t exactly thrilled, he’s been going up to everyone trying to convince them he’s starving, but he’s figured out how to get a little grass through it, and he hasn’t rubbed himself raw trying to get it off. That feels like a win all around.
