The Texas outbreak was reported after the World Championship Barrel Racing (WPRA) finals in Waco, Texas on Nov. 5-9. The Oklahoma outbreak was confirmed at the Barrel Futurities of America (BFA) race in Guthrie, OK yesterday with original exposure to the virus tracing back to the Texas event.

Horses that were at either event should be isolated from other horses for the next 14 days.

EHM spreads through horse-to-horse contact, shared buckets and/or tack, contaminated trailers, airborne droplets from horses coughing or snorting and from people who handle exposed horses.

Horse owners should watch for a fever over 101.5, nasal discharge, lethargy, hind end weakness, and any neurological issues. If they notice any of these symptoms they should contact their veterinarian immediately.
