🚨 ACTION ALERT! Help Wildlife—Contact Rep. Golden to defeat HR 556 in the U.S. HOUSE this week! 🚨

While U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service worked to institute a ban on lead ammunition and fishing tackle in designated wildlife refuges, set to take effect in September of 2026, and aiming to protect wildlife from lead poisoning, HR 556 seeks to stop this ban from being implemented and would be a big step backwards for wildlife.

Northeast Equine and Peace Ridge Sanctuary 👉 STRONGLY OPPOSES HR 556 👈 which would forbid federal land management agencies (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service) from restricting the use of lead ammunition on key federal lands covering about 600 million acres of land, which is nearly a third of the land area of the United States.

Despite its known toxicity, lead-based ammunition remains the largest source of unregulated lead intentionally released into U.S. lands and waters, with 40,000 to 80,000 tons of lead ammunition dispersed across 1.5 billion acres annually in the United States.

👉 During the last House vote, Maine’s Congressman Golden voted in favor of HR 556. Please reach out and urge Representative Golden to protect wildlife and VOTE NO on HR 556. Congressman Golden may be reached at (207) 241-6767 👈

The case for banning lead ammunition is settled science, with studies documenting its deadly effects on wildlife. Peace Ridge’s former veterinarian of 15 years had this info to share on why he is also urging people to contact Congressman Golden to help defeat HR 556:

"I perform necropsies (animal autopsies) on common loons several times every month. Many have significantly elevated lead levels. I find that the continued use of lead is deeply concerning. This bill will only increase the risks of lead poisoning.” - Edwin Barkdoll, DVM

You can learn more about the issue by reading this primer on lead ammunition prepared by Animal Wellness Action’s director of Veterinary Science, Jim Keen, DVM:https://animalwellnessaction.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/Lead-Ammo-Report_0113246.pdf

Salty had her baby this early evening. We've been on baby watch all month, and here we are!

Salty came in last late April, after having found herself in a dealer's filthy barn, with the threat of being shipped to Quebec for slaughter once he found out she was blind. We believe that is where she found herself becoming pregnant as well.

Salty is near blind, after being whipped across her eye. When she first came in with her young daughter at her side, we couldn't even touch her.

She's safe here with her new baby ♥️ She'll get everything she needs, and baby will stay by her side for the rest of their lives.

❄️ Dangerous cold snaps kill.

👉Take precautions for domesticated animals now!

If you can take your chickens/birds/rabbits/ and any other small animals inside until the cold snap passes, please do. Elderly, newly born, and debilitated animals are ESPECIALLY SENSITIVE!

We've heard people saying they don't want the mess in their house, but there are lots of ways to accommodate your animals creatively so they don't suffer and die.

For farmed animals that can’t get brought inside, provide as much warm dry bedding as possible and keep cleaning and replenishing. And for those people who only clean their coops a couple times a year (besides the fact that it's gross) we suggest you get out to your barns now to clean and bed them down with fresh, thick material ASAP!

Large animals like equine and ruminants will survive more easily if they have access to:

*fresh warm water
*salt
*a TOTAL BLOCK from any wind in a dry shelter with bedding like shavings and straw

💨 WIND WILL KILL IN ARCTIC TEMPERATURES

Dogs and cats who are forced to stay outside WILL FREEZE TO DEATH. Get them inside NOW!

If you're worried about an animal in your community please start your advocacy right NOW, as authorities will most likely be inundated and it may take quite some time for a response. If you don't get a response that you think makes sense- climb the communication ladder. Need help? Contact us!

The state regulations for care and shelter of animals is grossly inadequate-- even in the best of weather animals are afforded very little and in times like these THEY NEED YOU TO WATCH OUT FOR THEM!

👉Do what you gotta do to make sure animals in our communities aren't left to suffer.👈

Everyone wants us to save horses.

But in order to save them, we have to take care of them- in all weather, on holidays, and during all of life's circumstances.

We're looking for both staff and volunteers.

Working for a nonprofit is the best way to promote change in your community. It won't make you rich, but if that's all you're looking for, you may as well consider yourself poor, even if your wallet is full.

Want to see animals starving less? Being abused less? Consider putting your time into the solution. If we all put some time in, we're closer to more of a solution.

We're also looking for pet-only adoptive homes. If you want a pasture pal to hang out with, and you have access to solid veterinary care, have some money to spend on them, a good barn and solid fencing- please reach out. (We do not adopt out performance horses, program horses, or horses to ride. But we have AWESOME "pet" horses).

🚨 Action Alert—Help End Equine Slaughter

Save America’s Forgotten Equines (SAFE) Act (H.R. 1661/S. 775) is a bipartisan bill introduced in Congress to ban the slaughter of horses, mules, and donkeys in the U.S. and prohibit their export for slaughter.

As many of you know, even though there are currently temporary restrictions on slaughtering equines in the U.S., this hasn’t stopped horses and donkeys from being shipped to Canada and Mexico for slaughter.

The SAFE Act would permanently outlaw slaughtering equines in the U.S., as well as make it illegal to ship horses out of the country for slaughter to finally close the loophole that has existed.

Please reach out to your U.S. House Representative to urge them to co-sponsor and support the SAFE Act. You can look up your representative’s information here: https://www.house.gov/representatives/find-your-representative

You can also look up here whether or not your Representative is currently a co-sponsor (Maine Friends—Chellie Pingree is a co-sponsor, Jared Golden is not) here: https://www.congress.gov/bill/119th-congress/house-bill/1661/cosponsors

Or, if you prefer, the ASPCA has put together an electronic form with draft messages that can be automatically sent to your Representative, urging them to co-sponsor and support the SAFE Act. And if your Representative is already a co-sponsor, they will receive a thank you message instead on your behalf. https://secure.aspca.org/action/safe-act

Every horse in this country, no matter how loved, is just one bad sale away from slaughter. To protect horses and the people who love and care for them, we must pass the Save America’s Forgotten Equines (SAFE) Act.
