Alamogordo Dog Rescue - Adoption, Rehabilitation & Sanctuary

Alamogordo Dog Rescue - Adoption, Rehabilitation & Sanctuary Alamogordo Dog Rescue is a home based foster care program with several temporary homes You start as a "rescue" what is a pretty generic term.

The success of any organization lies in those dedicated to its mission

A lot about our "mission" changed in 2016. Most of us never change and we keep rescuing, finding homes and educating - tirelessly. Some of us change and we turn our rescue mission into rehabilitation. I know many people think that time and love can fix everything or at least a lot - Sadly that's not always true! And that's the

moment when many of us switch from finding homes to rehabilitation and later on to a sanctuary. Many groups take cases no one else wanted, the sad stories with abuse and neglect. It's always heartbreaking to read about such a case, we all want to hug and cuddle this dog and stuff it full with Milkbones and sausage but that's not always the best way to go if you don't want to creat a scenario with a pretty bad ending. To mark a dog or cat as un-adoptable is not because I don't trust others ability to work with them, it's because I don't trust them to not put themselves or others in danger. When you pull a dog from a shelter, you never really know for what kind of behavior issue you just signed up. This knowledge comes much later, after weeks and months of training, daily routine, new situations and trying over and over again. We do not put down any animal for space, what means, with so many sanctuary/hospice animals we took over the last years, there isn't much room to play anymore and our yearly intakes went down from about 350 to 50+ with about 70 residents at a time. Because of the rescue re-homing/rehab/sanctuary/hospice transition over the last 3 years, we just renamed our FB page. A minimal adoption fee will be charged for our adoptable pets. This is only to recoup some of the costs involved in caring for each animal. Please note, We do not receive assistance through grants or any other source. Our average monthly cost for the dogs is between $600 and $1000. That doesn’t count additional needs such as pens, fencing, crates, etc. When you consider these ongoing costs, you will realize the adoption fee truly is minimal and not negotiable! A special thanks to family, friends, adopters, and everyone who supports our sanctuary and hospice dogs and cats in so many different ways! Please feel free to contact us by Email or phone:

We are all devastated by the fires in Ruidoso, so much is already lost and zero containment.

This time, we can't help much with homeless pets but we can offer 1 RV spot with water and electric.
1-2 outside chainlink kennels, with shade and walls, mist system and fenced play yard.
For horses/donkeys, maybe even goats, we have about 2 acres already fenced and/or we could move our portable polytape efence around your RV or whatever is needed to contain your equine family.

Whole property is fenced, if someone gets out, they won't get very far.

Some people offer temporary reptile or pet bird housing, if you need a temporary place for any kind of pet, please don't hesitate to ask - we'll help you to find a place.

Let's not forget about our elderly, check on your neighbors, maybe they need a ride or a phone to call their families.

Last but not least, our precious wildlife, from sparrow to elk. They are all scared, misplaced and possibly injured. Expect them to cross roads in a hurry or to look for shelter and water in unusual places. If you are in a position to leave a bowl with water out, please do so, they will need it on their journey to safety.

Let's be kind to everyone involved

We are still around πŸ‘

Last few months were "ruff".
We lost a few of our senior cats from Ohio Ave.
Sister DirtyFace, Scratch, MamaKitzy, Ms Ferrell, PITA, Patches, Zeblue...
3 dogs, Stella, Tommy and one of our personal dogs - The goodest boy of them all, after almost 18 years πŸ˜” and sweet Gimpy, our house duck

Still got some moving boxes sitting here- I just keep tossing a blanket over it, lets me forget about it and makes the cats happy.
Of course there was some personal crap no one likes to talk about, Family is flying in tomorrow and somehow we got hooked on goats 🐐
Still not sure how that happened...

Anyway, let me introduce you to Freddy Freckles
We just got him last week, he is such a good boy!
He loves cuddles, scratches and apples- lots and lots of apples!
Freddy Freckles is 15 years old - old as dirt.
Back in spring, Freckles broke one of his scurs off.
Scurs are small horn re-growths that develop after a kid goat has been disbudded.
That's not really a huge problem, it happens but when flys kept laying eggs and maggots ate his flesh, that's when πŸ’© got out of hand.
Freckles kept rubbing it open, infection after infection, one fly-egg-larva circle after another, all summer long.

Everyone is overwhelmed sometimes but Freckles injury is not like overgrown nails or my dog really needs a good brush kinda situation - poor Freckles was suffering.
I don't want to be dramatic but maggots coming in and out of someones head must be torture!

Accidents and injuries happen - this isn't it!

Our vet at Paw In Hand did an amazing job with his wound!
Still super gross but better bad πŸ˜…
Freckles got x-rays, some tissue went to a lab, rotten flesh got removed and everything is wrapped like a sweet (stinky) gift πŸ’™

Please, there is no shame if you have to admit that taking care of your animals is just too much and please believe me, a peaceful death is not the worst.

The 5 Freedoms in Animal Welfare:
Freedom from hunger and thirst
Freedom from discomfort
Freedom from pain, injury or disease
Freedom from fear and distress
Freedom to express normal behavior

Freddy Freckles is getting vet care incl antibiotics, vaccines and pain control. He sleeps soft, dry and warm. He got his own little yard while he is recovering, he found new people to spend time with and of course lots and lots of hay and apples 🍎

Here is a picture of Freddy Freckles begging for apples, in our laundry room πŸ™„ he wasn't doing so great after his bandage change last night and I wanted to keep a close eye on him.

If you are anything like me, you probably would like to see a picture of his wound, even tho you know it will be pretty gross - I'll post it in the comments, you are welcome πŸ˜„

Hospice Foster Needed

Stellas surgery gave her a bit more time but her malignant mammary tumor spread to her lungs and we probably look at a few more weeks πŸ˜” it's small but she already started coughing...

It's hard to ask for a hospice foster but we are still moving our animals over to Tularosa and we don't have the time we usually do. Stella deserves the best last weeks of her life.

To foster Stella doesn't cost you anything. We do cover food, chewy bones, her meds and vet bills.

If you are home most of the day, don't have any cats and would like to make Stella some meatballs, please reach out to us.

At this moment, she is still playful, eating just fine , rolling around in the dirt. She does have very good house manners, she likes to meet people and to stay somewhere else doesn't bother her, she is a very social butterfly.

She has to stay in Alamogordo/Otero County.
I know some do but we do NOT let her go on her own. Stella will see her vet when it's time, you are welcome to be there but no pressure , I get it ✌

Our moving adventure is pretty rough and I haven't posted about MaybeBaby yet.
Dec 27th, when I fed our cats their night snacks, I noticed a tiny tabby sneaking around our cat run. Larry, our house rooster chased her off but kitty came right back.
Poor thing looked pitiful, couldn't even run away in a straight line and tripped over her own feet.

Hypothermia, malnutrition, dehydration and loaded with parasites...
We named her MaybeBaby because "maybe she makes it, maybe not..."

She isn't a big fan of people, when she was sick, we could take her temperature and clean her cage without any fuss, times are different now πŸ˜„

She is healthy, a bit chubby, parasite free and it's time to get her vaccines started
MaybeBaby has to hang out inside the house and keep hating us until she is fully vetted and the feral cat shelter at our new place is set up.

Cats are suffering and the ones responsible couldn't care less...
Kitty season is coming - Spay and Neuter those felines!

I guess it's official - We are moving 😳

It will be rough-we never knew we had so much stuff πŸ˜„

We haven't sorted our emotions yet but so far everything is on track, except the move itself...
It isn't across country, only 30 minutes north in Tularosa but at this very moment we are experiencing a bit of chaos, just a little πŸ˜„

Strangers are walking around and schedules are way off - some of our dogs and cats are having a hard time adjusting.

I do worry about our one cat group, the ones we got from Ohio Ave in 2015/16. They are old as dirt, dealing with health issues and some are semi feral. We'll pack and move their area in one day and keep their stress as short as possible.

If you live in Tularosa, don't worry, we'll be pretty far out.
Our animals don't roam the neighborhood but our large dogs sure lose their minds during dinner time. Dinner starts around 4.30pm in the winter and around 7pm in the summer.

Our backyard poultry... no idea πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ
Biggest challenge might be the balance within our bachelor flocks. Rooster flocks have a pretty delicate flock dynamic. Let's hope their stress is manageable and we don't have to separate anyone into something we haven't build yet πŸ™„

(New neighbors; not sure about our roosters temporary housing but their permanent residence will face away from everyones property, same with dogs ✌)

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us and we'll try our best to work it out

If you stop by to complain, please be sure to bring wine or coffee - God knows we need it!

Ultimately, we want all the different areas/yards to be easily accessible again but that's probably not happening anytime soon.

No idea how to move animals if there isn't already something for them to move to... Can't take down gates or fencing without moving animals first...Sooo, I guess we'll figure it out as we go... little by little and coffee by coffee...

Not sure how to pull out 200something t-posts but again, I guess we'll see when we get there

It's a lot of I-don't-know-yet...

Veterans United surprised us with a gift basket full of goodies last night ❀
Playing with new toys helps a lot with stress and sure makes everything much better

This handsome muffin is being cared for by Animal Protection/Adoption Center in Hobbs, NM, ~3 hrs away from Alamogordo.

The staff got very attached to this sweet boy but it's time to get him out of there... before Monday morning...

He is incredibly friendly and calm with people, great on a leash and great at riding shotgun. In fact, sweet muffin here recently joined Hobbs Christmas parade, riding in one of their animal control trucks, greeting people and wishing everyone Happy Holidays...

He first popped up in the system when his owner passed away. The shelter in Hobbs got him adopted out to a family where they discovered that he likes his food a little too much... I don't know if he is resource guarding in general or if it was a hiccup due to his whole world upside down...from my understanding, the other dog suffered NO injuries.
(PSA, every dog, doesn't matter where he came from, needs time to decompress - don't set them up for failure)
Otherwise, he gets along great with dogs and his current cellmate is a hyper one...

Personally, I love box heads, their market value in my heart is HUGE but we really can't take any new dogs at this moment...

If you are interested in this handsome Christmas Parade Muffin please contact his adoption center in Hobbs, NM.
I belive his case # is 88047, 64 lbs, shelter intake was 11/27/21 βŒ›

I know, an update is overdue ✌

If I'm able to scratch some energy and time together, I'll post some kind of overview but let's start with Stella πŸ’œ

Without looking at my papers, we first got Stella in 2012. She is about 11-12 years old now and a black Pitty everyone overlooked.

She hates cats with a passion and she would love to call Animal Control whenever you are 10 minutes late with her dinner.
To make up for that, she got some pretty good house manners and she LOVES kids, in fact we always loaded her up to visit school and kindergarten classes.

In September, I noticed a small bump on her belly. Nothing too bad and we decided to let her run until she gets uncomfortable... I was expecting many more months of happy Stella, little did I know that you could watch this thing grow... I marked her skin with a pen and within 48 hours, it was 1" over the line...

About 3 weeks later, it started oozing and it was time, I'm not lying when I say it never felt so wrong!
Friday, the day Stella was scheduled for her last journey, she was so freaking happy, we just couldn't do it πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

Our sweet vet did some xrays to check for spots in her lungs but couldn't see any. Because of how fast this thing was growing, Stella got squeezed in and scheduled for surgery the following Monday.

Of course such happy Pitty isn't a big fan of kennel rest πŸ’₯ pulled tubes, broken cones, scared cats, frustrated Pitty, lack of sleep....fun few weeks...

Anyway, Stella is doing great now!
Just a scar is left.
I know those surgeries are tricky but nothing new popped up and we are expecting her to be our happy Stella for a little bit longer now πŸ’œ

If the right person is interested in Stella, we wouldn't mind to give her adoption another shot πŸ˜‰
