🎉 Lenny the Bactrian camel had his first day of lead rope training with Zookeeper Sonny Shaw! 🐪 Once Lenny has become accustomed to wearing a halter and being led by a lead rope, he'll be walked back to the round pen for any medical needs, such as regular check-ups or vaccinations, and grooming! ✂️💈

If the results of this endeavor show promise, it may allow future Zoo visitors closer encounters with Lenny, who we're sure wants just as much to get up close and be petted! 🤗

We are happy to present the new Education Center at Alameda Park Zoo. This project was done with the help of the 29th Attack Squadron "Ghost Warriors", who put in over 700 hours of volunteer time during construction. Thanks to their tireless determination and effort, as well as generous donations from the community, we were able to transform the space from a run down and empty building into a new interactive learning center for the children of Alamogordo and Otero County. We are working to finish final preparations on the space so that we can open it to the public. Keep an eye out for updates on the opening of the center so you can come visit us as soon as possible.

✨ We'd like to thank Alamogordo 4-H Club for coming out this past weekend and volunteering to stain the deck of our duck pond! 🦆

The surface of the deck all around the duck pond is well taken care of, thanks to the efforts and willingness of these young volunteers, whose maintenance in cleaning and detailing the deck improves its life, look, and longevity for the enjoyment of all Alameda Park Zoo visitors! 👏

Today, our amazing young animal lovers got hands-on experience learning what it takes to care for the creatures of the wild! From preparing healthy snacks for our tortoises to learning how to clean enclosures and even meeting our friendly goats up close – our Junior Zookeepers did it all with big smiles and curious minds. 🐢🥕💧

🐾 Meet José the Guanaco – Fly-Free and Fabulous! 🐾

José is turning heads this summer with his fresh new haircut AND his stylish fly mask 😎🦟

While the fly mask keeps those pesky bugs away, we think it also gives him a bit of mysterious superhero energy. Don’t worry, he can still see just fine – and he definitely sees all the compliments coming his way!

🐾 Another wild and wonderful week of Jr. Zookeeper classes is in the books at the Alameda Park Zoo! 🌿

Our young animal lovers spent the week learning about wildlife care, conservation, and what it takes to keep our furry, feathered, and scaly friends happy and healthy. From prepping meals to cleaning enclosures (with a few cuddly moments in between 🦎🐢🐇), these future zookeepers showed passion, curiosity, and heart every step of the way.

We’re so proud of their hard work and can’t wait to see what next week brings! 🐒💚

Our young animal enthusiasts spent the week getting hands-on experience, learning how to care for our amazing animals, and discovering what it takes to be a real zookeeper. From feeding time to enrichment activities, these future wildlife heroes worked hard and had a blast doing it!

🐫☀️ It's that time of year again. As temperatures continue to rise many of our fur covered friends, such as Lenny the Bactrian, begin to shed their thick winter coats! Some zoo residents don't have fur, but instead have wool which has to be sheared instead.

While wondering around our little zoo if you see any of our residents with patchy fur, they are just taking off their jacket for this summer heat! ☀️🐫
