Happy Friday! What alternative therapy is being used here?
Answer: Spinal manipulation, which is the equivalent of chiropractic care for humans. Spinal manipulation increases horses range of motion, and can aid in diagnosis and treatment of subtle lameness issues. This horse loves her adjustments, and can be very expressive.

What is the gait abnormality in this horse's right hind leg?
This horse has fibrotic myopathy. This is a mechanical lameness where damage to the semimembranosus and semitendinosus muscles results in a restriction of the muscles causing this gait.
The initial injury is caused by abrupt starts and stops, and the scar tissue that develops shortens the mobility of the muscle.

This foal was born with an angular limb deformity called carpal valgus, which is basically a problem where one side of the bone is growing faster than the other. A procedure called periosteal stripping was performed to correct the deformity. Basically, a needle is inserted into the periosteum (outer covering of the bone) of the physis (growth plate) to alleviate restriction on the side that is growing slower (the outside in this case). The pictures were taken just prior to the procedure, and 2 months after the procedure. He is now growing appropriately and is much more comfortable. His caretaker has nick named him McGhees' Knees.

I am so lucky. Yesterday was spent working , I then rushed to my son’s soccer game, then ended the night working on more horses. So lucky to have understanding clients that are happy to work with my hectic schedule. I had my trusty vet assistant with me, and she truly has a special bond with this guy.
