The Aiken Horse
With the ever changing situation surrounding Covid-19, we realize many fewer people might be out and about where they can pick up our paper in the coming weeks. We are hard at work on the April-May issue, and we hope everyone gets a chance to read it, either online or by getting a physical paper.
To make it easier for our readers who might be limiting their travels outside the home, we have decided to offer free delivery of our April-May and June-July issues. We will be mailing the papers out shortly after they print -- they might take a little extra time to get to you, but you will get your own copy without having to leave your home. If you would like to continue subscribing for the rest of the year, the cost is $24 for the year, and your paid subscription will start with the August-September issue. Email us and we will send you a link to pay online, or you may send us a check to P.O. Box 332, Montmorenci, SC 29839.
If you want to read the paper right away we will still be distributing it in various places, depending on what is open in a couple of weeks, and we will be purchasing some outdoor boxes that will be placed downtown so you don't have to go into any businesses to pick up your copy. And of course, the paper will also be available as a digital edition online.

Happy Saint Nicolas Day! The great Saint and his Donkey. There are many stories, this is my favorite one 💕 Donkeys are part of a very beautiful tradition ❤ ~ Ariane
During the night of December 5th to 6th, St Nicolas with the help of his little Donkey visits homes to give children presents or punishments. His Donkey carries two pouches, one with gifts for the good children (sweet treats, chocolates and special cookies) and one with punishments (twigs, pebbles, etc) for the naughty ones.
Before going to bed, children would leave some hay, carrots and a little basket of oats. Children would also put their shoes near the fireplace and sing a song to Saint Nicolas. The shoes overflow in the morning with special Saint Nicolas treats.
Even the good children find ribbon-tied birch twigs, as everyone does something naughty!
Bakeries and home kitchens are a hive of activity as spiced gingerbread cookies and Mannala, a brioche shaped like the good Saint.
St Nicolas (Sinterklaas) was brought to America by the Dutch colonists, adopted by the Americans and transformed in Santa Claus.

St Nicolas is celebrated in France, Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, Eastern Europe and some areas in Italy.

JIMMY, 'The Sergeant', another war Donkey Hero who became a Mascot to British troops.
He learned to raise his hoof in salute by soldiers who brought him up. After the war, Jimmy raised thousands of pounds for the RSPCA charity.
He was born at the Somme (France) in 1916. Soldiers of the 1st Scottish Rifles were fighting German forces when Jimmy’s mother was fatally injured, just as she started to deliver her foal. The German side stopped firing and started to cheer as Jimmy was delivered by the ‘Jocks’ and taken back behind the British lines. From then on, he was adopted and looked after by the Cameronians who fed him tinned milk; when he became strong enough to do so, Jimmy was employed carrying ammunition, supplies and wounded soldiers. Jimmy saved countless soldiers' lives. Although wounded 7 times by shellfire he carried out his duties, and this dedication to duty earned him the distinction of being given the honorary rank of Sergeant, which was signified by having three stripes marked on his bridle. He was later honoured by the award of the prestigious Dickin Medal for bravery, the highest military honour for an Animal, by the Cameronian's Museum in Hamilton, Scotland.
Jimmy is buried in Peterborough and they still remember him.
