Last week was a challenging week to say the least The following was posted by Adair County Sheriff's Office Sheriff Jeff Vanderwater. Thank you for the kind and thoughtful words.
“ALL of the peace officers involved in this incident encountered an especially evil individual Tuesday morning on a very dark and rural stretch of I-80 in Dallas County. About 37 hours prior in Colorado, this individual shot a female in the head while in the presence of a Colorado Springs police officer and then fired on that same Colorado Springs police officer, before fleeing the scene.
When a Dallas County deputy initiated a traffic stop for one or more traffic offenses on April 15, 2025, little did the deputy know that the traffic stop involved an individual who had an out-of-state warrant for his arrest, was driving a stolen vehicle, who had recently tried to commit murder upon at least two persons in Colorado, who was possessing a stolen handgun and was mentally prepared to try and murder multiple of OUR peace officers here in central Iowa.
Even after firing multiple shots at OUR peace officers, those involved had the training, professionalism and composure to attempt to take this individual into custody without further bloodshed; but the bad guy instead chose violence.
As peace officers, much of the time we are only able to react to the circumstances presented to us during the course of any given situation. When confronted with one of the most extreme, challenging and life-threatening situations that we, the public, ask our peace officers to handle, all of those involved rose to the challenge, performed exceptionally under great pressure and did the job that we ask them to do; protect themselves, protect each other and ultimately (and most importantly), protect society.
This job that we ask our peace officers to perform does not come without a cost. This cost is one that can be extremely high and can take an extreme physical and emotional toll on the peace officer and their family. Please keep all of those directly involved, their immediate family and all the additional first responders who also had a duty to investigate and respond to this incident and others like it, in your thoughts and prayers in the coming weeks”.
