ChillyPigs Cavies - Show & Pet Quality Guinea Pigs

There seems to be some confusion about my post yesterday stating domestic guinea pigs cannot survive in the wild.

While it’s true there are different species of wild cavies in parts of the world, domestic guinea pigs (or Cavia porcellus) is not one of them.

The guinea pigs we keep in our homes have gone through several thousand years of domestication, removing them completely from their wild ancestors.

There is no acceptable situation to dump your domestic pets. Dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, goldfish, pythons, etc. Domestic animals do not belong in the wild, even though they were derived from wild ancestors thousands of years ago.

And then there was one. 😔

Following a short and sudden illness, Valkyrie crossed over the Rainbow Bridge tonight to be with her mother Freya and daughter Maple. She is survived by her son Oak, the last remaining piggy in my home (for now).

Valkyrie, also known as "Val," "Valley-Girl," "Valkyr-iggy," and "Valky Bartokomous," was a very special member of the ChillyPigs cavy herd. She and her littermate brother Baldr were the first pups ever born here at the caviary, to proud parents "Odin" and "Freya." Her reg name, "Ride of the Valkyries," is the title of a famous piece of classical music by Richard Wagner that was inspired by the same Norse myths.

I will miss her and the shrill, excited little wheeks she let out every time the dogs got fed. (It definitely worked, too - she scored more than a few extra treats that way.) She was so sweet and lovely, and she was the first newborn cavy I ever held in my hands.

Rest easy, Valkyrie. I'll watch over Oak a while longer.
