Frank Herefords is a small herd of registered Hereford cattle in the Stillwater Valley south of Columbus. Austin started building his herd in 2005 with three heifers he bought from Spear Two Herefords in Gillette, WY. Since then the herd has grown through heifer retention and purchases from favorite herds throughout the US and Canada. We select polled and horned genetics based on calving ease, mil
k, and maternal quality and try to build the herd with another philosophy of “grow small, NOT broke.”
Cattle are calved out starting February 15th with the heifers always first in the program. For the first few years we used only natural service for breeding but in recent years we have started more extensive A.I., frozen, and IVF embryo work. This has given us more options to expand some of our genetics with elite bulls such as Golden Oak Outcross 18U, CRR About Time 743, and NJW Hometown 10Y just to name a few. After breeding, the cattle are summered primarily on lease pastures of both dry and irrigated ground throughout the Stillwater Valley and Billings area. When the pairs return home in the fall, bull calves are placed on a creep feed ration to precondition for wintering at Midlands Bull Test then marketed through their sale in April. A few calves will also be selected for the show string where they will exhibit at the NILE in Billings, National Western StockShow in Denver, and Black Hills Stock Show in Rapid City. After the return from Rapid City, there are just few short weeks to prepare for the cycle to start all over again.
