🐾💙 May Is Arthritis Awareness Month! 💙🐾

Did you know our furry friends can get arthritis too? Yep, dogs and cats can feel those creaky, achy joints just like we do.

Arthritis happens when the cartilage cushion in a joint wears down, making movement painful. And it’s not just a “senior pet” thing; instability from hip dysplasia, luxating patellas, injuries, illness, or metabolic issues can start the process early.

🐶 Young pets can have arthritis.
🐱 Flare‑ups can happen anytime.
💛 It can’t be cured but it can be managed.

Even when the inflammation settles down, the disease keeps progressing quietly in the background. That’s why early detection is everything.

If your pet is slowing down, hesitating on stairs, or acting stiff after naps, it might be time for an arthritis check‑in or pain‑management chat with us. Let’s keep those paws comfy, those tails wagging, and those whiskers wiggling all month long. 💛🐾

We’re helping rehome a 7‑year‑old neutered male Yorkie whose owner recently passed. He’s diabetic (well controlled on insulin), needs regular glucose checks, and is on a prescription i/d lowfat diet for previous pancreatitis. Morgan is a very sweet boy!

If you can offer him a loving home, please reach out to Jennifer at 605‑380‑0058.

🌿 May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month 🌿
Lyme disease is transmitted to dogs through the bite of an infected deer tick (black‑legged tick). Once in the bloodstream, the organism can travel throughout the body and often settles in the joints or kidneys.

🕒 Symptoms usually appear 2–5 months after infection, when the disease may already be widespread. Signs can include:
• Generalized pain
• Lack of appetite
• High fever
• Swollen joints
• Sudden limping that may shift from leg to leg
• Dogs may appear to “walk on eggshells”

Because other illnesses can look similar, veterinarians use blood tests—including quick in‑clinic antibody tests—to confirm exposure. Additional blood and urine testing helps assess kidney health and check for protein loss.

🛡️ Prevention is the best protection.
Reduce your dog’s exposure to ticks and keep them on a year‑round preventative such as:
• Simparica
• Simparica TRIO
• Bravecto Quantum
• Frontline Shield (topical)

Did you know? Deer ticks are most active October through March, making consistent prevention essential even in colder months.

📞 Contact us today to get your pet’s tick prevention and keep them protected all year long!

💚🐾 Mental Health Awareness Month 🐾💚

Caring for animals is incredibly rewarding, but it can also be emotionally challenging. Veterinary professionals face long hours, high-stress situations, and the weight of caring for both pets and the people who love them.

This month, we want to recognize the importance of mental health for our team, our colleagues, and our community. Taking care of yourself is just as important as taking care of others.

At Red River Animal Emergency & Referral Center, we’re proud to support a culture of compassion not just for our patients, but for the people behind the care.

💚 Check in on a friend or colleague
💚 Take time to rest and recharge
💚 Remember- you’re not alone

Together, we can continue to support one another and create a healthier, stronger community....

The AVMA proudly joins the World Veterinary Association (WVA), HealthforAnimals, and colleagues from around the world in celebrating World Veterinary Day. The 2026 theme is “Veterinarians: Guardians of Food and Health.”

From farm to fork, veterinarians are at the frontline of ensuring that food of animal origin is safe, nutritious, and responsibly produced. Their work protects consumers, supports sustainable food systems, prevents zoonotic diseases, and strengthens global health security. World Veterinary Day 2026 aims to elevate public understanding and policy recognition of veterinary services as a cornerstone of sustainable and secure food systems.

🌟 April 22 is Pet CPR Day 🌟
Emergencies are frightening, and we hope you never find yourself in a situation where CPR is needed. But being prepared can make all the difference when every second counts.

Below are the basic steps of Pet CPR to help guide you in an emergency until you can reach a veterinary hospital:

🐾 1. Check for breathing and a heartbeat
Look for chest movement and feel for a heartbeat. If neither is present, begin CPR immediately.

🐾 2. Start chest compressions
Hand placement varies by pet size (see diagram).
Press hard and fast at 100–120 compressions per minute, compressing 1/3 to 1/2 the width of the chest. Allow full recoil between compressions.

🐾 3. Give rescue breaths
Gently close the pet’s mouth, extend the neck to open the airway, and cover the nose with your mouth. Exhale until you see the chest rise.

🐾 4. Continue CPR in cycles
Perform 30 chest compressions followed by 2 rescue breaths. Repeat continuously until the pet begins breathing on their own.

🐾 5. Recheck every 2 minutes
Look for breathing and a heartbeat. If there is no improvement, continue CPR while transporting your pet to the nearest veterinary hospital.
