It's been a minute since Jontu made his arrival at the zoo so we're bringing you a gorilla group update! 📢

Since his arrival in March, Jontu has been settling into his role as silverback in the troop. This is his first time being with an all-female group, but he's no stranger to leading — he headed up the bachelor group at his last home before coming to us! His animal care team say he is very playful and athletic and very, very fast.

While a big portion of a silverback's role is to lead the group, he has also taken direction from Koola, the dominant female of the troop. When learning the ropes about their day-to-day routines, Koola would help Jontu by placing her hand on his arm in order to guide him on and off habitat.

Gorillas are vegetarians, they eat only plant foods. And all their food grows around them. The gorilla has only to reach out and pluck the stem or leaf it likes. Eastern gorillas eat mostly stems and leaves.
