On the Chonos archipelago (Chile) lives along the shores of salty and brackish reservoirs. Nutria is able to tolerate frosts down to -35 ° C, but is generally not adapted to life in a cold climate.

The range expands or decreases depending on the warm or cold winter. In some cases, frosty winters led to the complete disappearance of nutria, for example, in Scandinavia and the northern states of the United States in the 1980s [8].
Nutria leads a semi-aquatic lifestyle. Favorite habitats are reservoirs with weakly flowing or stagnant water: swampy river banks, reed-cattail lakes and alder-sedge bogs with rich aquatic and coastal vegetation. It avoids continuous forests; it does not rise above 1200 m above sea level into the mountains (Andes).

The natural range of the nutria is limited to the southern half of South America from Bolivia and southern Brazil to Tierra del Fuego. It has been acclimatized in many countries in Europe and North America; did not take root in Africa.
