Thailand, which was called Siam until 1939, is a country in Southeast Asia. It is roughly equal in size to France. It has developed agriculture, deposits of sapphires and rubies, forests of trees of valuable species, rich cultural traditions. All this particularly attracted the European colonizers. However, unlike neighboring countries, Thailand was never a colony. The "Land of the Free" remained a buffer between the parts of Asia colonized by Great Britain and France. This made it possible to preserve uniqueness for a long time.
