Mbwa Wa Africa Animal Rescue

Mbwa Wa Africa Animal Rescue Mbwa Wa Africa is a safe haven for injured and sick animals. We run a Rescue Centre as well as a Veterinary Clinic. As an NGO, we rely on YOUR help!🐾

Our first priority is to find loving and forever homes for the rescued dogs. Secondly, to inform about our work, increase awareness of the situation of the stray dogs and reach out to people, who are willing to offer help of any kind. We started off with building 5 kennel to accommodate the dogs and puppies we kept on finding and couldn't fit into our house - occupied by our 8 rescues already- any

more, until they would be recovered and ready to make a new owner happy. These 7 kennel by now are sometimes the temporary home for up to 35 dogs and several cats...

Carlos’ Fight for Life 💪

Some stories are harder to tell than others. This one makes us both angry and incredibly grateful at the same time.

Carlos is the beloved dog of our caretaker Gifty. Like many families here, Gifty lives in very simple conditions without a fence. His dogs roam freely during the day, always coming back home. He loves them more than anything, and in the village where Mbwa Wa Africa used to be, people generally treat dogs kindly, a change brought by years of the rescue’s presence.🐶

But it only takes one cruel person to destroy everything. One afternoon, a drunk man slashed Carlos across the back with a machete. The wound was so deep that his spine was nearly severed. Just a few millimetres more, and there would have been no other option but to let him go. 💔

Gifty rushed Carlos to our clinic immediately. It was late, but our dedicated team, Anna, Naftal, and Haika, stayed to fight for him. They cleaned and stitched the terrible wound, not knowing if Carlos would ever stand again.

The next day, we held our breath. Could he walk? And then... he did. Slowly, stiffly, but proudly. Carlos stood up. He wagged his tail. He was alive.

Carlos was on strict kennel rest to give his spine the chance to heal. His back legs are stiff when he walks, but he is full of joy every time Gifty comes to cuddle his ears or take him for a short walk. He may face challenges in the future, but for now, he is alive, and happy. 🐕❤️

Carlos’ story is a reminder of both the cruelty and the kindness people are capable of. Thanks to Gifty’s love and our clinic team’s dedication, this boy has been given a second chance. We hope he has many more happy years ahead. ❤️

We want to say a very big thank you to Judith for sending us some urgently needed supplies!! 🙏🎁

Judith and her whole Family are very big supporters of Mbwa wa Africa and have even made three of our rescues their own and have given them the best homes possible!

Whenever her sister Helen visits, you can be sure that her luggages are full of goodies for our animals and both of them are supporting us on a monthly basis as well. ❤️

When Judith asked what we desperate need at the moment, it only took a few days and two packages were on their way to Tanzania.

Especially the cones and pro-biotics were very needed and are already in use with our inpatients and puppies.

Thank you so much for always being on our side and for your endless kindness and support! Without people like you, we would not know what to do. 🙏

Dorado & Joey’s Happy Ending 🎊🌸

Some adoptions are extra special and this is one of them. After three long years at our shelter, Dorado and Joey have finally found their forever home! 💛

Both boys had a difficult start in life. Dorado was born under a container on the streets to a very shy mama dog. Sadly, two of his siblings didn’t make it, and we brought the others to safety at the shelter. Dorado grew into a cheeky, sun-loving pup, always ready to play but often shy with strangers. 🐶

Joey’s story is just as heartbreaking. He was rescued by one of our caretakers when his owner was on the way to tie him up in the forest and leave him to die, simply because he had gone after chickens in his hunger. Malnourished and weak, he was nursed back to health in our clinic and grew into a lively, happy soul.😊

When Joseph and Emanuel came to visit, they were ready to give two dogs a chance at a better life. To our joy and surprise, both Dorado and Joey immediately warmed up to them. Even Dorado, who is usually wary of strangers, had taken to them. It was as if they knew: this was their moment. 🏡❤️

After years of waiting, these two boys are finally home. We couldn’t be more over the moon and we are so grateful to Joseph and Emanuel for opening their hearts to them.❤️

Here’s to love, second chances, and the happiest new chapter for Dorado and Joey! 🥰

We were contacted about this gentle street dog after someone had slashed his back with a machete. The cut was deep, and on top of that, Chess also suffered a fractured femur. 💔

Our clinic team immediately treated his wounds, stitched him up, and gave him the rest he needed to heal. Despite everything he went through, Chess turned out to be the sweetest, most loving soul, the kind of dog who truly didn’t deserve any of this.😔

The community in his area generally cares for the dogs there, and they were the ones who reached out for help when Chess was injured. Sadly, as so often happens, it only takes one cruel act from one person to cause so much pain.😡

After his recovery, Chess was able to return home, to his pack and the people who watch out for him. 👏

Meet Michelle, our wonderful volunteer from Ireland and as she likes to point out, North Cork (apparently that distinction is very important 😉).

Michelle joined us for three weeks on one of her final stops after a year of travelling, and from the moment she arrived, she was full of kindness and love for our rescues. She was always hands-on, never shying away from work, and even serenaded the dogs with her medleys, something they will surely miss. 😋 Pippa, her favourite, enjoyed countless massages and extra love thanks to her.

Even when she injured her finger during her stay, Michelle didn’t slow down. Tough as nails, she carried on helping every day with a smile, while others might have packed up and quit their travels altogether.

We are so grateful for the time and energy she gave to our dogs and cats. Michelle, thank you for your big heart, your songs, and your incredible spirit. You left pawprints here at Mbwa Wa Africa, both on the animals and us. 🐾❤️

🦟 Battling Ticks & Fleas – A Lifesaving Donation 🐾

With over 100 dogs in our care, one of our biggest ongoing struggles is finding effective flea and tick medication. What’s available here in Tanzania is either extremely expensive or poor in quality. Yet ticks are a very serious threat, causing dangerous diseases such as Tick Paralysis, Ehrlichiosis, or Lyme disease.

Ideally, our dogs should be treated every three months. But until now, we’ve always relied on volunteer vets and kind supporters to bring us small supplies – never quite enough to cover everyone.

That’s why we are beyond grateful to Vets Without Borders Austria, who sent us an incredible 1,200 NexGard tablets. 🙌

This generous donation not only ensures our shelter dogs are protected for the months ahead, but also allows us to treat many street dogs in desperate need of this protection, too.

A huge Thank You to Vets Without Borders Austria for helping us keep our rescues protected! ❤️🐕

Trine’s Lucky Day 🍀

While Six was out in Arusha responding to a call about an injured puppy, something else caught his eye, a dog with a plastic wrapper tightly wrapped around her tail. The puppy, as it turned out, had already been taken care of by kind neighbours.

That’s when he found Trine. ❤️

The plastic had cut deep into her tail, causing most of the tissue to die off. We can’t imagine how long she had suffered like this or how much pain she was in. But Trine didn’t give up.💪

Back at the clinic, Anna performed an emergency surgery to remove the dead part of her tail, and almost immediately, Trine’s spirit lit up. She turned out to be the sweetest, happiest girl. Full of energy, always ready for cuddles, and friendly to everyone she met. 😊

Once her wound healed, Trine was able to return to her neighbourhood. People there do care for the local dogs, but it only takes one careless person to cause harm like this.💔

Our shelter is bursting at the seams, and as much as we’d love to keep every dog that comes through our gates, we simply can’t. Trine was lucky — Six was in the right place at the right time.👏

Stay safe out there, sweet girl. 🌸

The resolution and the reality…🙄🐾

Yes, we have an admission stop because we struggle with space and taking good care of all the animals at the shelter.
And yes, we had to turn inquiries of taking in dogs down and people got angry with us.

As we said before, the well being of our animals must be priority. However, you can be sure we always do our best and for these dogs’ other places to go have been found.🙏🏽

We never turn a blind eye on medical emergencies and when we found out about some tiny stray puppies whose mother didn’t show up for 3 days, we had to step up to save them.

We expected three puppies, but then seven very cold, dirty, hungry and parasite ridden 3 weeks old doggies arrived.🐶

For two weeks Dersey, Bere, Rathlin, Sherkin, Spike, Skellig and Whiddy (our Irish volunteer Michelle got to name them 😉) are thriving and eating lots now and we are happy to report that they are doing well and growing fast!

Things hardly ever are going as planned, but karibuni sana, we love you little guys!❤️💫

Nadra is finally HOME! 🛖🐶

Maybe you still remember beautiful Nadra?
End of last year she was found wandering on the streets with a badly fractured leg.
How she ended up there???

Nadra was a wonderful dog, always friendly and ready for a cuddle. But her time on the streets and whatever happened to her that resulted in her injury had left its marks.😔

Her bruised soul was easily intimidated. Noises, fast movements and even loud voices would make her cowering down in fear. She didn’t want to be in the outside runs with the other dogs and would wait at the gate until we let her into office again.
She wasn’t a ‘shelter dog’, Nadra fitted in none of the dog packs and over the time she became one of the dogs that were allowed to sleep in our volunteer house. (and if she was lucky, even in the room of one of our amazing volunteers🥰)

She needed a home.

But like with so many of our rescues, people liked her, wanted her, but never came back for her.

Soooo, after 8 month we decided to take her home with us.😊💞
We (Jens and Sandra) always loved her, however we are almost never home and although we have a lovely caretaker for our animals, we were hesitating if this was the right decision for the sweet girl.

Then we tried - and it worked - beautifully, even with our two not so welcoming different abled dogs!

Nadra is home. A beloved part of our family, a happy couch potato and perfect fit for our little pack.🐾🐕

We are happy that we did that, and we think Nadra is too!
Welcome to the rest of your life gorgeous lady!💫💜

Our Story

The heart and essence of Mbwa wa Africa is to try everything in our power to ensure that each individual dog that comes into our care is given the best possible chance to recover, rehabilitate and be re-homed.

The foundation of our welfare policy is that dogs in our care not only have the basic needs required to sustain the necessary five freedoms:

· Freedom from hunger and thirst (food and water) All animals deserve access to clean water and a well-balanced, nutritious diet. ...

· Freedom from discomfort (shelter) ...
