A brighter future for working donkeys in the Lengijave market, Arusha!

For years, donkeys at Lengijave market endured long hours under the scorching sun while supporting their owners' livelihoods. Today, that has changed.

Thanks to the generous support of our partner, Network for Animals (NFA), and their compassionate supporters around the world, a new donkey shade has been constructed to provide rest, and access to clean drinking water for working donkeys during market days.

The shade will not only improve the welfare and comfort of these hardworking animals but will also support more efficient veterinary outreach services by providing a central location for mobile donkey clinics.

This is another important step toward creating a better world for working animals and the communities that depend on them.

Together, we are making a lasting difference 🧡.

There is something truly powerful about this moment captured in Lemanda Village, Arusha.

Beneath the dramatic skies of northern Tanzania, a Maasai man walks alongside his donkeys — a scene that tells a story far greater than what the eye can see. It is a story of resilience, culture, partnership, and livelihoods built side by side.

Working animals are more than helpers. They are companions in daily life, providers of opportunity, and silent partners supporting families and communities every single day.

This has become one of our favourite photographs because it captures something beautiful and real — the connection between people, animals, and the communities they help sustain.

As this new week begins, may we move forward with the same strength, purpose, and determination reflected in this moment.

New week. New energy. Bigger impact.

Happy Monday from ASPA 🧡

Weekend mode activated!

While some are stretching out and rolling into relaxation, these donkeys are reminding us that rest, comfort, and a little joy are important too.

Meet Prisca

Since 2011, Prisca has been selling fodder at Meserani Livestock Market, relying on her two donkeys for her daily livelihood.

To her, owning donkeys is more than having a means of transport — “having donkeys is like having a vehicle,” she says.

Every day, Prisca travels more than 10 kilometres to collect fodder, which she later sells to feed livestock brought to Meserani Livestock Market before they are transported to different destinations.

Today, Prisca is also a proud member of our donkey welfare group in Meserani, where she continues to advocate for better care and welfare for the animals that support her livelihood.

Sometimes the strongest bonds are built without words.

Between people and animals, trust, care, and companionship create connections that shape everyday life.

Because when we care for animals, they give back more than we often realize.

Last week, we were honoured to receive a distinguished delegation of animal health and academic professionals during their visit to the Arusha Society for the Protection of Animals (ASPA).

The delegation included Prof. Esron Karimuribo and Prof. Gerald Misinzo from Sokoine University of Agriculture, Dr. Caroline Uronu from the Veterinary Council of Tanzania under the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, and Dr. Jastin Kimanga from the Zonal Veterinary Centre (ZVC).

During the visit, ASPA’s CEO, Livingstone Masija officially handed over the recently launched Standard Donkey Treatment Guideline — an important resource developed by Arusha Society for the Protection of Animals with the support of Brooke East Africa and the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries.

We also recognize and appreciate the valuable contributions of all stakeholders who played a role in making this achievement possible.

The guideline marks an important step toward strengthening donkey healthcare and improving the welfare of working donkeys across Tanzania through standardized treatment practices and collaborative action.

From World Donkey Day 2026 in Geita, Tanzania 🇹🇿

A powerful reminder that behind many livelihoods, mining activities and transport systems — there is a hardworking donkey carrying the burden every single day.

This year’s celebration brought together government leaders, schools, animal welfare organizations, veterinary professionals, donkey owners, and communities in a colourful national event filled with donkey clinics, welfare education, cultural performances, school outreach, donkey parades, and advocacy for humane treatment.

In mining communities like Mgusu, where donkeys support the gold supply chain, the message was clear: donkeys deserve protection, proper care, and respect.

A total of 783 donkeys received treatment during the outreach activities, while thousands of students and community members were reached with donkey welfare education.

Because protecting donkeys is not only about animal welfare — it is about protecting livelihoods, dignity, and the communities that depend on them.

As the World Donkey Day marked in Mgusu, Geita, Brooke East Africa’s Head of Advocacy and External Affairs, Samuel Theuri called on the community to ensure donkeys receive the care and protection they deserve.

Addressing over 1,500 residents in an area where donkeys play a major role in supporting livelihoods and the gold supply chain, Theuri emphasized the importance of responsible ownership—urging communities to stop whipping, malicious cutting, and neglect, while ensuring donkeys receive treatment, water, proper care, and humane handling.

Mgusu continues to face serious donkey welfare challenges, including severe wounds, free roaming, overloading, and abuse.

Through continued awareness and partnership, stakeholders hope to build a community where working donkeys are protected as valued contributors to people’s daily lives.
